Guizhou is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities villages. Some of them are hidden in a basin surrounded by mountains. It offers the largest Miao village and Dong village to explore. In addition, several villages feature the well-preserved authentic tradition and cultures to experience.

The Zhaoxing Dong Village is the largest Dong village in China. The village is located around 10 minutes drive from Congjiang Railway Station to which you could take a high speed train from Guilin West Railway Station. It just takes some 50 minutes ride from Guilin. The entire village presents an appearance of a ship. Lying in a basin, it is surrounded by mountains. One river winds through the village. There are five drum towers in the village.

Every tower features its own structure. The drum tower is a symbol of a Dong village. In the morning, villagers always hold a ceremony to welcome tourists at the village gate from 09:00 to 09:30 (April – October) or from 10:00 to 10:30 (November – March).

Xijiang Miao Village is acclaimed as the largest Miao village in China and even in the world. It is an outdoor museum, displaying a development history of Miao people. There are several wind and rain bridges in the village. The buildings in the Miao style, Miao’s costumes, silver ornaments, and Miao’s food and local tradition are well-preserved in the village.

There is a local dancing and singing show in the morning and in the afternoon, demonstrating local culture. Night views in the village are ideal for photographing. Compared to Zhaoxing Dong Village, there are more visitors in the village. Many tourists think it is over-commercialized in Xijiang Miao Village.

Huanggang Dong Village is located around 33 kilometers from Congjiang County. It is hidden in the mountains. In the small village, 5 drum towers which are more than 10 meters tall stand out. It is underdeveloped.

In the village, there is just one hotel with simple facilities for now. One of the wooden houses is more than 100 years old. Locals do their daily life without paying attention to tourists. They just care about their daily activities. Most of the elder just could speak Dong language but couldn’t be able to speak Mandarin.

When you explore the village, you might see villagers doing some washing. If you want to enjoy the panoramic views of the whole village, it is recommended that you hike up to the hill behind the village. Every year, locals celebrate Goddess of Thunder Worship Festival (Han Tian Festival) on the 15th of June in the lunar calendar and Tai Guanren Festival (Guanren stands for the learned and successful people) on the 7th of January in the lunar calendar.

During these festivals, they always wear their unique costumes, play Lusheng and sing Dong choir.
