Baodingshan Peak - UNESCO Reclining Buddha Carvings
The crown jewel of Dazu's stone carvings, Baodingshan features over 10,000 Buddhist figures carved into a dramatic 500-meter limestone cliff face. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases some of China's finest examples of Song Dynasty Buddhist sculpture.

Thousand-Hand Guanyin - UNESCO Buddhist Sculpture
One of the most iconic and complex carvings at Baodingshan, the Thousand-Hand Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) is a breathtaking display of artistic skill. This multi-armed Buddhist figure demonstrates extraordinary craftsmanship of Song Dynasty artisans carved over 800 years ago.

Giant Reclining Buddha - Baodingshan's Iconic Carving
Stretching 31 meters across the cliff face, this colossal Reclining Buddha represents one of the world's oldest and most impressive stone Buddha sculptures. Carved during the Song Dynasty, this figure depicts Buddha entering Nirvana — a moment of profound spiritual significance.

Buddhist Narrative Relief Carvings - Ancient Stories & Sculptures
Beyond the iconic figures, Baodingshan's cliff walls tell detailed stories through relief sculptures. Scenes depicting Buddhist teachings, daily life, and spiritual narratives are carved with remarkable detail — ancient "stone comics" that communicate Buddhist philosophy visually.

Chongqing Tour Reviews
★★★★★ 5.0 · 640+ Reviews · 99.8% Excellence · TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Winner 2026Wendy Wei Tours organised an amazing journey for our group of 18 travellers to Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie. As seasoned travellers, this was one of the most memorable trips we have had. The team specialises in bespoke tours throughout China, with excellent attention to detail and communication in both Chinese and English. Special thanks to Sherry and Andrew for making our journey so memorable.
Wendy and her team are phenomenal! I was nervous about travelling to China because I do not speak the language, but they made it so easy to explore Chongqing. My guide spoke amazing English, all the arrangements were coordinated for me, and I saw everything I wanted to see while also discovering many wonderful new places. From hot pot to Hongyadong, it was all perfect!
We booked through Wendy Wei Tours after reading good reviews online, and the reviews were accurate. The team was very accommodating with our itinerary so we could see everything we wanted to. We had private tours in Beijing, Xi'an and Chongqing. All our guides were fantastic, with a special mention for Vivie, who made our time on the Great Wall especially memorable. Highly recommended!
We booked a driver-only service for our quick weekend trip to Chongqing with Wendy, and she was super helpful in putting together a fun itinerary, even without a guide. She was always quick to reply on WeChat and gave us lots of great restaurant and kid-friendly spot suggestions. Our driver, Lele, was very professional and a safe driver, and he knew exactly how to navigate the traffic while keeping us comfortable. It was clear that Wendy genuinely cared about our travel experience. Strongly recommended!
I contacted four tour agencies while planning our journey through Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, Zhangjiajie and Chongqing, and chose Wendy Wei Tours because their service stood out from the beginning. Wendy was clear, responsive and incredibly thoughtful, creating a highly professional itinerary and providing detailed travel advice that made us feel confident as first-time visitors... All our guides and drivers were outstanding, and we are already planning our second trip with Wendy next year.

Frequently Asked Questions
The full Baodingshan day tour runs about 7-8 hours from hotel pickup to dropoff, including all travel time and stops. The actual walking and sightseeing is around 5-6 hours, with breaks built in. If you add the optional Yangtze River Night Cruise, the total is 9-10 hours. It’s a full day, but not exhausting if you’re used to moderate activity.
Moderate. You’ll walk on uneven terrain, climb some stairs (like at the carving sites), and navigate mountain pathways. There’s no technical rock climbing or extreme elevation gain. Most people with average fitness do fine. Unfortunately, this tour is not wheelchair friendly. If you’re unsure about your mobility, let us know in advance and we can adjust the route or suggest alternative experiences.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal — mild weather, clear skies, and excellent light for photography. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid, but manageable with sun protection or have an earlier departure for the tour. Winter is cool and often overcast, but still wonderful if you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices. Any time works, but plan accordingly.
Baodingshan is the main site with over 10,000 carvings, including the iconic 31-meter Reclining Buddha and Thousand-Hand Guanyin. It’s the most impressive and most visited. Beishan (North Peak) is a separate site with earlier Buddhist carvings — smaller and more weathered, but equally historic. Beishan Peak also requires a longer hike with steeper uphill climbs. We feature Baodingshan in the main tour. Beishan is available as an optional evening experience (lights turn on at 7:30 PM) for guests who want to explore a second site.
Yes, but we don’t recommend combining them with the Yangtze River Night Cruise. Visiting both sites makes for a very long day (9-10 hours depending on your walking pace). We suggest choosing one of these options: (1) Full Baodingshan day + Yangtze evening cruise, or (2) Baodingshan day + Beishan evening tour. Both give you depth and a nice visit of Chongqing.
Yes, provided they are comfortable with moderate walking. The tour includes uneven paths and a number of uphill and downhill stairs, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Children aged 5+ are generally suitable. As this is a private tour, your guide can adjust the walking pace to suit your comfort. We do not recommend this tour for guests with significant mobility limitations or very young toddlers unless you are comfortable carrying them where needed.
Private transportation, an English-speaking guide, and all entrance fees to attractions. That’s it — no hidden costs. If you want optional add-ons (Beishan evening tour, Yangtze cruise), we’ll mention them in advance with costs so you can decide.
Lunch is at your own expense. Your guide will recommend authentic local restaurants based on your preferences (vegetarian, spicy, dietary restrictions all accommodated). Optional add-ons (Beishan evening tour: 200 CNY, Yangtze cruise: 380 CNY) are additional.
Completely. The schedule we show is a suggested itinerary. Want more time at Baodingshan and skip the museum? Want to add a specific restaurant? That’s fine — this is your private tour. Tell us your priorities when booking and we’ll build the day around what you actually want to do.
We pick you up from your hotel and drive 1.5 hours to Dazu. There’s also Dazu South Station located approx. 50mins by car from Dazu Rock Carving. If you want to start this tour from Dazu South Station or Chongqing Airport with dropoff in Chongqing downtown, we can arrange the pickup for an additional cost.
Contact us for a custom quote. We can usually accommodate bigger groups, but it might affect the vehicle type or require splitting into smaller groups. Let us know your size and we’ll figure it out.
No. Solo travelers, couples, families — all are welcome. The price per person adjusts based on group size (one person pays more per head than a group of 5, which is standard).
Yes. You can cancel free of charge up to 7 days before your tour. Within 7 days, we keep your 20% deposit. If you need to reschedule instead of canceling, we can usually find a new date with no hassle — just let us know at least 72 hours in advance. During peak tourism season (July-August, September-October) and China’s national holidays, please give us 5-7 days advance notice for rescheduling.
The cruise departs at 7:30 PM and lasts approximately 45–60 minutes. Relax as you cruise along the Yangtze River, taking in Chongqing’s spectacular illuminated landmarks, including Hongya Cave, Chaotianmen and Qiansimen Bridge. It’s the perfect way to unwind after your day exploring Dazu. You can add this experience when making the tour booking by clicking the “Book Now” button on our website or by contacting us at wendy@wendyweitours.com directly.
This requires a later start to Dazu (around 2:00-3:00 PM departure) so you can explore Baodingshan during daylight, then experience Beishan under magical evening illumination (lights turn on at 7:30 PM). You get both sites in one day but with less daytime exploration time. Additional cost: 200 CNY per person. Not compatible with the Yangtze cruise due to timing.
No. All our guides are fluent English speakers and hold professional tour guiding licenses. They can help with restaurant orders, directions, and explanations. If you need other languages, let us know in advance.
Absolutely. The carvings are incredibly photogenic, especially with morning light or the evening illumination at Beishan. Bring a good camera and be prepared to spend time framing shots. Your guide knows the best angles and lighting conditions.
