Originally built 6,000 years ago, Zhujiajiao Water Town is located at the junction of Shanghai and Jiangsu Province. It is an important channel for Shanghai to Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The town is situated 48 kilometers from Shanghai. It was declared as one of the 4 famous historical and cultural towns around Shanghai Area.

What to expect at the Zhujiajiao Water Town

Zhujiajiao Water Town offers the best-preserved old street in the Ming and Qing Dynasties – Beida Street. The street is typical of the style in regions south of the Yangtze River. The street is line with the old shops with the unique styles. There are 36 old bridges at the town. Among them, the best-known one is Fangsheng Bridge which is a 5-holes bridge. Other famed bridges are Tai’an Bridge built in 1584, Ping’an Bridge, Fuxing Bridge, Yongfeng Bridge and Lang Bridge.

 

Located at No. 147, Xijing Street, Kezhi Estate is a garden architecture in a manor style. Composed of halls area, artificial hills area and gardens area, it is also well-known as Ma’s Garden. On the top of Xiaoyao Tower at the artificial hills area, you can enjoy the panoramic views of the town.

 

Originally built in 1341, Yuanjin Temple was the place where significant cultural relics were well preserved in history. In the early of the 1950s, the temple was pulled down. In order to preserve the history, the temple was rebuilt in 2000.

 

The Daqing Post Office was one of the thirteen postal stations in Shanghai in the Qing Dynasty. Today it is also the only well-preserved post office in the Qing Dynasty in Shanghai. If interested, you can explore the Shanghai Handicraft Zhujiajiao Exhibition Hall where the classical works by masters of Arts and Crafts in Shanghai is on display.

 

In addition, you can refresh yourself at the Shanghai Water Sports Park on Dianshan Lake which is an activity center with international modern water facilities, Shanghai Sun Island International Club and Shanghai International Golf and Country Club.

The best time to visit Zhujiajiao Water Town is in the morning as it always takes several hours to explore the town.

 

The best months to visit are from March to November.

 

How to get to Zhujiajiao Water Town

There is only one bus passing by Zhujiajiao Water Town. Therefore, there are only a few options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the town from Shanghai. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus Zhuxu Route (朱徐线) to the Stop of Zhujiajiao (朱家角站).
