What is the Mutianyu Great Wall of China?
Located in Huairou District, Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) was originally built between 550 and 577. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), it was rebuilt. With a unique architectural style, Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) has a dense watchtowers.
Three towers stands on the same building - Zhengguan Tai. This section of the Great Wall is connected to Gubeikou in the east and Juyong Pass in the west.

What to expect at the Mutianyu Great Wall of ChinaThe Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) was built on the edge of the steep cliff on the outside. There are various kind of plants around the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu). The rate of plant coverage is up to 96%. The length of 2,250 meters offers 25 watchtowers to explore. That is to say, 2 watchtowers stand for every 100 meters. The density of the towers is the highest among Great Wall of China.
Also known as Mutianyu Pass, Zhengguan Tai is composed of 3 hollow towers. The middle one is the largest among the 3 towers. There are crenels on both sides of the wall while in other section of Great Wall, the wall only has crenels on one side. The most southeastern end of the length of 2,250 meters stands the No. 1 tower - Dajiaolou Tower. Walk northwest and you will reach the lowest tower, the 4th tower. Walk forward, and the city wall is relatively flat. You can walk to the 22nd tower on the most northwest end, and then you can take the chairlift downhill at the 14th tower. If interested, you can return to the 6th tower along the original road. You can take the toboggan downhill to the South Ticket Office. |
Best time to visit the Mutianyu Great Wall of China
The best time to visit Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) is in the morning as it will take you several hours to climb it in different section. The best months to visit are April, May, September and October.
How to get to the Mutianyu Great Wall of China
There are several buses passing by Great Wall of China (Mutianyu). therefore, there are several options.
- Rent a vehicle to the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu). This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus h23, h24, h35 and h36 to the Stop of Mutianyu Huandao (慕田峪环岛). Then, walk there.
- Take the shuttle bus at Qianmen Tourist Bus Center or at Dongzhimen Tourist Bus Center.

- Entrance pricing for the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) is 40 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included) and 65 years old (65 years old not included) are charged 20 NCY per person; children under 1.2m (1.2m not included) are free of charge.
- As at 8th October 2020, the entrance pricing for the one-way shuttle bus in the scenic are is 10 CNY per person; the entrance pricing for the round-trip shuttle bus in the scenic are is 15 CNY per person.
