What to expect at Dazhai

As home to Red Yao people for hundreds of years, Dazhai is not so popular as Ping’an Zhuang Village. Therefore, there are more old houses at the village. A stream runs around it. At the Viewpoint of Thousand Layers to the Heaven, you may see the bird’s eye view of Dazhai Village. Dazhai CarPark has the cable car uphill to the Viewpoint of Golden Buddha Peak offering the bird’s eye view of Jinkeng Rice Terraces. In spring, the trails around the village are decorated with wild flowers. On the lunar 6th of June when married ladies with their children and husband return home to visit their parents, Dazhai always holds the Festival of Hanging out the Clothes. That day ladies take out the costumes and hang them on the rope above the balcony in the house first.
Then, they’ll go to the Wind and Rain Bridge to invite tourists to try local rice wine. Combing the long hair is the third activity. Local ladies in the costumes stand in the stream before the bridge. They keep long hair with a length of 1 meters at least. They put down the hair and demonstrate how they comb and tie the hair on the head. After that, you’ll see the process of making the costumes through looms by local ladies. A traditional group wedding is followed by the process. The wedding is exciting. There will be several interesting games, such as catching fishes in the stream, and chickens on the square. At night, the sky above the village is lit by fireworks while the terraces nearby are decorated by torches. Generally speaking, the village is crowded with tourists that day. But if you explore the village on weekdays, it is very quiet and the views around the village may be not as amazing as those in Ping’an Zhuang Village.
