What is Zhenyuan Old Town?
With a history of more than 2,200 years, Zhenyuan Old Town in the east margin of Guizhou was built along Wuyang River. Overlooking the town, it looks like Tai Chi diagram.
The old town features hundreds of ancient buildings in Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1912) Dynasties with the old city offering more than 50 ancient buildings.

What to expect at Zhenyuan Old TownPacked with winding ancient lanes and streets, Zhenyuan Old Town features the ancient Qinglong Cave chaplets in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In addition, it offers old houses, old pavilions, ancient temples, ancient wharfs, old city walls, old batteries and so on, which are of high ornamental value and scientific value. With high firewalls, cornices and carved beams, all the old buildings were built with black bricks and tiles. Each blue stone slab and each blue brick in the old town have witnessed the history of the town.
The old houses there have both the style of the courtyard in Yangtze Delta area and the layout of the mountainous architecture, creating a wonder in the Chinese architectural history. With an intricate structure, the old lanes and streets are narrow and deep. Old wells in different shapes are dotted around the town. As Wuyang River winds through the old town, visitors can enjoy its charm on a cruise boat as well. Covering an area of 3.1 square kilometers and offering more than 200 places of interests, the old town is home to more than 20 ethnic minorities. Numerous festivals are held every year, such as “Song Festival on the lunar March 3rd” of Zhuang people, New Year of Miao people, King Cattle Festival on the lunar April 8th of Miao people, “Chixin” Festival on the lunar June 6th, Suona Festival on the lunar August 8th of Tujia people and so on |
Best time to visit Zhenyuan Old Town
If you are planning to visit Zhenyuan Old Town for photography purposes, you can visit it around the year. However, it is recommended that the best time to visit the town is from May to September. As it rains a lot during the period of time, it is suggested that you take an umbrella or a coat with you.
How to get to Zhenyuan Old Town
As the roads around the old town are underdeveloped, there are only a few options.
- Rent a vehicle from other cities in Guizhou. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take a train from Guiyang to Zhenyuan County. Then, transfer to Bus 1 to Zhenyuan Old Town.

- There are bicycles to be rent in the old town.
- Opening hours: 24 hours.
- As at 5th October 2020, entrance pricing to the big boat is 80 CNY per person while entrance pricing to the small boat is 60 CNY per person; admission fee to Zhenyuan Old Town is free of charge; admission fee to Qingling Cave complex is 60 CNY per person.
