What to expect at Zhamei Temple
Zhamei Temple is mainly composed of the main hall and side halls. The halls all are in 3-storeyed civil structure, with thick walls, yellow tiles and gilded copper tops.
Both of walls of the gate of the main hall are painted with fine Tibetan Buddhism murals. A golden prayer wheel stands in front of the murals. In the west side hall, a 12-meters-tall seated statue of gilded Maitreya Buddha is worshiped. There are 6 murals created in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912) on the four walls of the hall. The murals present the content of Buddhist scriptures. The figures in the murals are vivid. The main hall is surrounded by the dormitories of Lamas.
Usually, there are one or two lamas in the temple. Other lamas always live in their own houses. When it is a dharma assembly, hundreds of lamas in kasaya will gather in the temple. They will wear yellow cockscomb caps as well. You will see the unique dharma-vessels at the assembly. Four dharma assemblies are regularly held from the lunar third to the ninth of January, in the middle of the lunar March, from the lunar June to the lunar July and on the lunar twenty-fifth of October. On the assembly, you will be amazed at the mysterious ceremony.
