What to expect at Xizhou Town
Xizhou Town is centered on Sifang Street. In an area of 17.32 hectares, most of the significant Bai buildings are gathered. There are 88 Bai buildings well-preserved in the town, including the Qichi Shulou Building in the Ming Dynasty style which was built in around 1526, Yan’s Compound, Dong’s Compound, and Yang’s Compound, etc. Yan’s Compound is the former residence of Yan Zizhen who was a rich businessman in Xizhou Town in the Republic of China. Composed of 4 courts, the compound was completed through 12 years’ work. The screen wall, exquisite carvings, and fine murals are typical of Bai’s buildings. Most of the courtyards are decorated with living plants, such as camellia, orange osmanthus or pomegranate.
Walking along the street, you will see the unique Bai tie-dye cloth hung on a rope. Printed with Bai’s patterns, the cloth presents the strong characters of Bai people. Groups of the elder enjoy chatting in the sun or under an old tree. Several of the old banyan trees in the town are more than 1,000 years old. Paying little attention to travelers, locals just do their own daily work. If you are interested, you could visit Puzhen Jiuran Museum (璞真九染博物馆) to know how Bai people make tie-dye cloth. The gate of the museum is in the Ming and Qing Dynasties style. Following the staff of the museum, you will be shocked at tie-dye cloth painted with a variety of flowers on. The museum offers a workshop to the visitors to experience the process of tie-dye. The color on the cloth is made with isatis root but not chemical dyes.
