Situated on the hillside of the Nanlian Mountain, Xishuangbanna Nationalities Museum is surrounded by green trees in three directions except the front. Based on the local life and culture in Xishuangbanna, the museum features the cultural relics which present the Dai custom and tradition, including the traditional articles of daily use and production tools. It is a comprehensive nationalities museum, combining national culture, cultural relics collection, scientific research with education.
What to expect at the Xishuangbanna Nationalities Museum
Since the opening to the public in 2013, Xishuangbanna Nationalities Museum is composed of 5 parts. The first part “Retrospect on Mengle” introduces the historical evolution through archaeological discovery, documents in Chinese and Dai languages. The documents also show the development in Xishuangbanna and the hard-work of locals after the liberation there on February 17, 1950.
The second part “Harmonious Songs” presents the colorful and unique national cultures of the 13 nationalities settling in Xishuangbanna for hundreds of years, including, Han, Dai, Hani, Bulang, Jinuo and Lahu ethnic minorities through related costumes, books, instruments and the like.
The third part “Rainforest Charm” shows the geography, nature, and the situation of ancient creatures and modern creatures in Xishuangbanna. The fourth part introduces the national and folk cultures in Xishuangbanna through the cultural classics and artistic relics of the nationalities there. And the fifth part demonstrates the long history of exchanges between Xishuangbanna and the countries in Mekong River Basin.

Xishuangbanna Nationalities Museum is not crowded with visitors. Therefore, you could visit it during the opening hours.

How to get to the Xishuangbanna Nationalities Museum
Unfortunately, there is no direct bus from Jinghong to the museum. The only one option is to rent a vehicle to the museum.
Additional Xishuangbanna Nationalitie Museum Travel Advice
- Opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday: 09:00 - 12:00 (visitors are not permitted to enter the museum from 11:30) and 15:00 - 18:00 (visitors are not permitted to enter the museum from 17:30). It is closed on Saturdays.
- As at 23rd October 2020, visitors can explore the museum for free.
- It is suggested to take an umbrella or raincoat with you as it could be rainy and sunny in one day in Xishuangbanna.
- Please wear the sunscreen scream and sunglasses.
