Originally built in 1921 by Chen Jiageng (1874 – 1961), Xiamen University covers and area of some 646.67 hectares. It is composed of Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang’an Campus and Malaysia Campus. Siming Campus is acclaimed one of the most beautiful campuses across China.

What to expect at Xiamen University
As the first university established by overseas Chinese, Siming Campus of Xiamen University offers Furong Lake, Lovers Valley Reservoir and tens of buildings with a combination of the European and Chinese styles. It is also a birthplace of many national heroes in the Anti-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War.
Most of the buildings at the campus are a fusion of the Chinese and Western styles. The facade is Western while the roof with cornices and green tiles is in the Chinese classical style. Windows and doors are big enough so that it is bright inside.

The copper statue of Mr Chen stands in front of the History Hall of Xiamen University. At the hall, you’ll get the main information on the development of the university. Precious exhibits there tell the historical facts on founders of the campus and those alumna who made great contributions to the development of this country.
Collections at Lu Xun Memorial Hall introduce the close relationship between Lu Xun (1881 – 1936) and the university. He worked as a teacher at the campus at the end of 1926 and spent the hardest time of his life there.

At Furong Lake, you’ll be amazed at the pretty black swans. They usually enjoy swimming on the lake. It is not suggested that you feed them on your food. Their keepers will feed them on the special food.
The 1.1-kilometers-long Furong Tunnel is decorated with diverse graffiti created by students. It is a special spot where the campus students make their creative works and exchange ideas on life, or society. There is a cafe in the tunnel. You can write what’s in your mind on a postcard and send it.
The Lovers Valley is very popular among students lovers. Some of them make a promise to each other that they’ll marry and stay together all life. The valley also attracts eyes of photographers. In addition, it features stunning background for pre-wedding photos.
If you’d like to take photos of the Twin Towers of Xiamen, Shangxuan Square is a good option. The square formerly worked as the drill ground of Fujian Navy Force at late Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912).
Best time to visit Xiamen University
The best time to visit the university is in the morning on weekend.
The best months to visit are from March to November.
How to get to Xiamen University
Several buses pass by the university. Thus, there are several options.
- Rent a vehicle to the university. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 2, B3, 20, 22, 29, 47, 48, 71, 86, 87, 92, 96, 135, 659, 751, or Bus 857 to the Stop of Xiada Xicun (厦大西村公交站).
- Take Bus 1, B1, 21, 45, 309, 751, or Bus 841 to the Stop of Xiada Nanputou (厦大南普陀公交站).
Additional Xiamen University Travel Advice
- Visitors can explore the opened parts of the university for free.
- It offers two entrance to visitors, South Gate (大南门) and Qunxian Gate (群贤们).
- Opening hours from Monday to Friday during the schooling time: 12:30 – 14:00 (The number of visitors is up to 1,000 during the period of time. 700 tourists can enter the university through South Gate and the rest can enter it from Qunxian Gate).
- Opening hours at weekends, summer and winter vacations and other public holidays: 08:00 – 17:00
- The number of visitors is up to 5,000 per day for weekends, summer and winter vacations.
- The number of visitors is up to 10,000 per day for the public holidays.
- You’d need to book the free entrance ticket on the official account on WeChat – Xiamen University Visitors Booking System (厦门大学访客预约系统) 1 day prior to the visit date at least and 3 days to the visit date at most.
- After arriving at the university, you are required to go to the reception at the second floor under the ground on visitors center first to certify your identity with your passports and then you can enter the university through either of the gates mentioned above.
