Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is the most popular one in Hanoi. It has been opened since the 11th Century. The water puppet show is the most distinctive traditional folk stage play in Vietnam, and is also the unique puppet show of its kind in the world.

What to expect at the Water Puppet Theater
The water surface works as the stage of the water puppet show. Puppet performers standing behind the bamboo curtain in the water and holding the puppets in hand, the puppets float on the water. They operate the puppets through bamboo poles and thin solid lines to make them do a series of actions, such as jumping, rowing and rolling over. Before the show, they always Dressed in the traditional Vietnamese costumes, instrumental players sit on the left of the stage, plays and sings Vietnamese folk traditional songs.
Water Puppet Show has a long history of around 1,000 years. It originates from the Red River Delta. The show tells the local life and history through demonstrating the rural life, historical stories and legends in Vietnam, including the dragon dancing, lion dancing, phoenix dancing, Emperor Li Return the Sword, boat racing, fairy dancing, fishing, rice transplanting, etc. In addition, due to the needs of international exchanges, foreign stories have also been added as the theme of the puppet show, such as “Nightingale”, “Tin Toy”, “Ugly Duckling”, “Mermaid”, and “Snow White”, “Aladdin Lamp”, and other Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairytales.

The best months to visit are from April to October.
How to get to the Water Puppet Theater
The theater is located near Hoan Kiem Lake. You could take a bus to the lake first and then walk to the theater. Thus, there are a few options.
- Rent a vehicle to the theater. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 9, 31, and Bus 36 to the Stop of Ngã 3 Lê Thái Tổ – Hàng Trống. Then, walk to the theater.
- Take Bus 14 to the Stop of BĐX Bờ Hồ. Then, walk to the theater.
- Take Bus 8 to the Stop of Bưu điện Thành phố Hà Nội – Đinh Tiên Hoàng. Then, walk to the theater.

- Opening hours: 08:30 – 20:30 (Monday – Sunday)
- As at 24th October 2020, there are 3 different types of seating at the theater. The pricing of the different types of seating is as follows: 200,000 VND per person–150,000 VND per person– 100,000 VND per person. - The opening hours for show are at 15:00, 16:10, 17:20, 18:30 and 20:00.
