What Are The 6 Best Things To Do In Guilin In January? 

For visitors traveling to Guilin during the month of January, be prepared as it's one of the coldest months to visit Guilin! However, rainfall is also the least (usually) in the month of January with the added benefit of less tourists visiting. There are several things to do and attractions to visit in Guilin for visitors traveling in January and find out more below!

1. Li River Cruise

The natural landscape along the Li River Cruise is always breathtaking throughout the year. As it rains little in January in Guilin, the Li River level is low. There are two options for you to choose from.
  • Private motorized rafts are usually available
Motorized raft runs from Xingping to Nine-horse Fresco Hill and then back to Xingping. The landscape in the section is the highlight along the Li River. Please note, the pregnant women, children under 1.2m tall (1.2m tall included) and the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are not allowed to take the raft due to the safety.
  • Big boats operating daily
Big Li River Cruise boats are for all ages of people. It departs from Guilin Pier to Yangshuo. It lasts nearly 4 hours. 

2. Visit Yangshuo

The town of Yangshuo (and it's countryside!) is located approximately 1.5 x hours South of Guilin (via road) and some of the best things to do in Yangshuo include:
  • West Street is a must-visit spot in Yangshuo. You will find interesting shops there. It is also a paradise for photographers, shopping lovers and foodies. It features Chinese and Western restaurants, a variety of hotels (Chinese, European and Japanese styles), and much more to experience.
  • If you are a keen photographer, Xianggong Hill and Cuiping Hill are great choices. They both offer viewpoints overlooking the gorgeous karst landscape and surroundings. Xianggong Hill is ideal for appreciating the sunrise over the Li Riverwhile Cuiping Hill is good for admiring the sunset in the Yangshuo Countryside.
  • Yulong River Valley offers exciting activities to experience as well. The best ones to enjoy in January are cycling and walking.

3. Reed Flute Cave

Reed Flute Cave is located around 6 kilometers north of the center of Guilin City. Bus 3 could take you to the parking of the cave directly from the heart of the city. The cave features crystal clear stalactites with stone inscriptions.

4. Elephant Trunk Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill is situated at the heart of Guilin City. It resembles an elephant drinking in the water. It features several old pavilions, one old pagoda, old stone inscriptions and one old temple to explore. The Memorial Hall for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom offers you a great chance to get acquainted with its history.

5. Longji Rice Terraces

The Longji Rice Terraces are hidden in the mountains. In January, if the temperature is minus one degree and much lower, the rice terraces are always covered with snow. Although it is bare in the terraces, the snow grants them distinctive charm as well. Tens of ethnic minority villages are situated there. At any time around the year, they are waiting for you to explore.

6. Impression 3rd Sister Liu Show

The Impression 3rd Sister Liu Show presents local culture, such as Zhuang folk songs, and cormorant fishing together with the scenery of the Li River. Actors are from local villages. It has to be noted that the show is always closed for one month prior to the Spring Festival in China. From the lunar year 3rd of January, the show is on again.  Please check dates beforehand as it changes each year.
