The Sound of Yunnan Show is designed and directed by Yang Liping, a renowned dancer across China. Various types of sound in the show amaze the audience. The actors come from ethnic minorities villages in Yunnan, such as Hani, Tibetan, Bai, Naxi, Wa people and so on. They use bamboo, hoes and even stones to make beautiful sound.

What to expect at The Sound of Yunnan Show

The Sound of Yunnan Show is regularly put on at Yunling Theater, No. 183, Minzhu Road, Old Town of Lijiang (古城区民主路183号云岭剧场). It lasts for 60 minutes at least. The show is a fusion of traditions and modernity. It offers the local original singing and dancing together with local folk dance, presenting the rich ethnic customs in Yunnan. All the actors wear local ethnic minority costumes.

In the prelude of Sound of Fetus, alms bowls are employed to create the unique sound. It is pioneered in music filed. In the Episode 1 of Worshipping, you will hear the sound made by Yunnan drum and know some about the sacrificial activities of several ethnic minorities in Yunnan. In Episode 2 of Singing to Each Other, you will feel the true love between boys and girls through their performance. In the Episode 3 of the Sun Rain, performers imitate various sounds in the nature with a variety of tools. They spray wheat to each other. With a winnowing fan on the head, female performers dance to the fullest.

In Episode 4 of Beating with no Rhythm, pots, pans, bottles and jars create amazing music in the hand of the performers. In Episode 5 of Sparrow God and Strange Birds, one Hani girl and one Hani boy play the one bamboo flute which is more than 10 meters long. They play the flute, walking from the back of the auditorium to the front. The flute is rotated by them when they play it. Leaves, stone mills, sickles, and hoes are used to play beautiful sounds as well. In Episode 6 of Cockfight, you will see the popular leisure activity and enjoy the sound made by Lusheng. In Episode 7 of the Drunken Drum, men sing and dance with a wine jar in the arms. One man is beating the drum.

Best time to visit The Sound of Yunnan Show

As at 15th February 2019, the opening time for the show is from 18:30 to 19:45 and from 20:15 to 21:30. Times may change.

How to get to The Sound of Yunnan Show (Yunling Theater)

A few buses pass by Yunling Theater. Therefore, there are a few options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the theater. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 3, 4, 6, 9 and Bus 20 to the Stop of Red Sun Square (红太阳剧场). Then walk to the theater.

  • Opening hours: 18:30 – 19:45 and 20:15 – 21:30.
  • As at 19th October 2020, the entrance pricing to different types of seating for the show is as follow: 360 CNY per person for VIP Seat and 280 CNY per person for the ordinary seat.
