What to expect at the Suzhou Silk MuseumSet up in 1991, Suzhou Silk Museum has been opened to the public since 2013. The museum is composed of silk history hall, modern hall, science hall for children, a white mulberry garden, exhibition hall of silk looms, Silk Culture and Art Hall of Qian Xiaoping.
The silk history hall tells the related history from the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC) through the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) to the Republic of China (1912 - 1949) in the region through the replicas of the ancient silk products before the Tang Dynasty, silk fragments before the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and the exquisite costumes before the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912). You can find the old robes of officials, officers, and princes. The dyeing workshop has the traditional machines for weaving Song brocade and colorful Zhangzhou velvet satin to explore. The exhibition hall of silk looms features 7 machines to visit, including ironwood electric silk loom, lasting silk loom, cylinder silk winder, silk doubling frame, twisting machine, silk warper, and pirn winder. In the modern hall, you’ll be amazed at the appealing fashion silk products. The silk taffeta wedding dress for Princess Diana is one of the highlights in the hall. Apart from, you can also appreciate other exquisite modern silk products. The science hall for children offers a huge silkworm for children to explore. They can walk through the silkworm to see the structure and also hear the changes of the silkworm. The Silk Culture and Art Hall of Qian Xiaoping presents the outstanding silk products of Qian Xiaoping good at the Song Brocade, one of the founder of Suzhou Silk Museum. The museum holds temporary silk exhibitions as well. |

How to get to the Suzhou Silk Museum
A few buses pass by the museum. Thus, there are a few options.
- Rent a vehicle to the museum. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 1, Y4, Y5, 8, 38 or Bus 101 to the Stop of Pingmen (平门站). Then walk to the museum.
Additional Suzhou Silk Museum Travel Advice
- Opening hours: 09:00 - 17:00 (Tuesday - Sunday). It is closed to the public on Mondays. Visitors are not permitted to enter the museum from 16:00 on.
- Tourists can visit the museum for free.
- Flashlight, or tripod is forbidden to be used in the museum.
- Pictures or videos taken in the museum is forbidden to be used for commercial purpose.
- Please keep quiet in the museum.
- Please book the free entrance ticket on the official website - http://www.szsilkmuseum.com/a/fuwu/canguanyuyue/. One passport or ID can just book 3 tickets.
- Please present your passport at the ticket office to get the free entrance tickets.
