The quarters is the miniature of the Suzhou Old City. It offers Suzhou Museum, and Suzhou Garden Museum which is located adjacent to Humble Administrator’s Garden.

Both of the museums introduce the history and development of the classical garden in Suzhou from the Yuan Dynasty (1271 – 1368) to the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912) through the gardening tools, pictures and models of gardens of different periods of time in Suzhou. At Suzhou Museum, you’ll know some about the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
If you are interested in local operas, it is recommended that you explore Pingtan Museum and Kunqu Opera Museum. Pingtan is a kind of storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect. They both tells their own history and development through costumes, musical instruments and some scripts.
Humble Administrator’s Garden in the quarters is the most popular among domestic Chinese tourists. If you love a quiet environment, you can pay a visit to Couple’s Retreat Garden which is also designed exquisitely. In addition, the East Garden in the garden offers stunning views to admire.
The quarters is home to locals for hundreds of years. You can explore small lanes to see how locals enjoy their life. Traditional old houses stand there and witness the history of the quarters. They are still well-preserved. There is also a market in the area. If interested, you can visit it to know about the local life style and eating habits.
The best time to visit the quarters is in the morning as there are lots of things to do there.
The best months to visit are from April to October.
Several buses pass by the quarters. Thus, there are several options.
- Rent a vehicle to the quarters. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus Y1, Y2, 55, 178, 202, 309, 313, 518, 529 or Bus 923 to the Stop of Suzhou Museum (苏州博物馆). Then walk to the quarters.
- Opening hours: 24 hours.
- As at 15th October 2020, visitors can explore the quarters for free.
- If you’d love to visit the classical gardens there, you’d need to pay for the entrance tickets.
