Su Causeway ​- spectacular views in Spring

Originally built in 1089 under the command of Su Shi (1037 – 1101), a poet, writer, calligrapher, and painter in the Northern Song Dynasty (960 – 1127), Su Causeway is lined with green willows. It is 30-40 meters wide and 0.4 meters higher than the surface of West Lake. The causeway stretches across the entire West Lake waters. It is acclaimed as the best spot to enjoy the views of the lake.

What to expect at the Su Causeway

Su Causeway is connected by 6 old stone bridges originally built in the Northern Song Dynasty. Bridge railings are carved with exquisite patterns. Yadi Bridge is one of the best spots overlooking the entire lake.

 

Willows, peach trees, magnolia trees, flowering cherry, Hibiscus trees, and other species of plants grows on the causeway. Consequently, you’ll see different views in the four seasons along the causeway. 

In spring, long green willow branches dance in the breeze while pink peach blossoms give out refreshing fragrance.When it drizzles in the West Lake in March, views there are more breathtaking.

 

Between late May and late June, stroll along the causeway and you’ll be attracted by colorful lotus flowers in the lake. When the wind blows, green leaves of the lotus make for green waves. In autumn, the causeway offers red, yellow and green views to admire. Red maple leaves with the blue sky are great photography materials as well.

 

If you explore the causeway at sunset or sunrise, you may be amazed at the views at that time. All things there are covered with golden sunlight.

Best time to visit Su Causeway

If you’d like to visit the causeway for photography purposes, the best time to visit is at sunrise and sunset.

 

The best months to visit are from March to November.

 

How to get to Su Causeway

Several buses pass by the causeway. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the causeway. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 504, 514, 882, 808, 4, K4, Y6, Y7, 315, Y3, 51, 52, or Bus Y2 to the Stop of Sudi (苏堤站). Then walk to the causeway.
  • Take Bus 27, K27, 7, 118, Y10, 52 or Bus 51 to the Stop of Yuemiao (岳庙站). Then walk to the causeway.
