Southern Mosque Urumqi - a Qing Dynasty style Islamic mosque located in Urumqi

Originally built in 1919, the Southern Mosque of Urumqi stands near the southern end of South Liberation Road in Urumqi. The mosque features a Qing Dynasty Style, differing from other mosques in China and even around the world.

The main building at Southern Mosque – the Worship Hall has a raised type. The front part of the roof is covered with glazed tiles. The ridge of the roof is decorated with the tile of two dragons playing with beads and other tile ornaments. The five-layered drawing board under the roof is painted with multicolored patterns such as grass and flower patterns. The ridge purloin are carved with 22 dragons. The walls on either side of the corridor are carved with orchid, plum blossom, bamboo and lotus.
The Worship Hall is divided into the inner hall and the outer hall. The outer hall is 15 meters wide and 22 meters long. The inner temple is 15 meters wide and 15 meters long. The temple can accommodate thousands of people for worship. The mosque also offers a propaganda building, a shower pool, rooms for scholars and a reception room for foreign guests.
You could visit the Urumqi Southern Mosque at any time during the opening hours except on the lunar 1st and the 15th.
The best months to visit are from April to July and from September to October.
A few buses pass by Southern Mosque. Therefore, there are only a few options.
- Rent a vehicle to the mosque. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 61, 310, 920 and Bus BRT-3 to the Stop of Erdaoqiao (二道桥). Then walk to the mosque.
- Opening hours: 09:00 – 20:00
- As at 17th October 2020, it is free to visit the mosque.
- Please do not wear shorts or short skirts at the mosque.
- Please keep quiet at the mosque.
- Please wear the sunscreen cream, sunglasses and the like to stop the strong sunlight shining your body directly in the dry weather.
- Please take enough warm clothes with you even in summer as the temperature difference is big between the daytime and the evening in Urumqi.
- Generally speaking, ladies are not allowed to visit the mosque.
