Opened to the public in 1997, Sophia Square covers an area of 2.2 hectares. Located in the center of Harbin City, it is the site where Saint Sophia Cathedral, Jewish New Synagogue and the architectural art square.

What to expect at Sophia Square Harbin

Sophia Square is well-know for the Saint Sophia Cathedral. Through the restoration in 1997, the cathedral stands out on the square with the onion-shaped dome. The dome is fitted with fine patterns inside. The facade is decorated with sculptures with the style during the Tsarist Russia. Frescoes in the cathedral are also amazing. Originally built in 1918, Jewish New Synagogue is acclaimed as the largest synagogue across China. The facade is white-and-red.

The back entrance offers wooden windows with hexagonal stars unique to Jewish architecture. Exhibits and materials inside tell the life of the Jews and their contributions to the city from late 19th Century to early 20th Century in Harbin. You’ll also find many miniatures of architectures there.

Several bars, a cinema, and a roller skating rink are entertainment options on the square. An artistic brick corridor, steel tower corridor and other European architectures let you feel that you were in Europe. The music fountain in the middle adds more attractions. In winter, the architectures covered with snow create more breathtaking views.

Best time to visit Sophia Square Harbin

If you’d like to visit the square for photography purposes, the best time to visit is at night.

The best months to visit are from December to February and from May to July.

How to get to Sophia Square Harbin

Several buses pass by the square. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the square. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 1 and Bus 5 to the Stop of Zhaolin Street (兆麟街). Then, walk to the square.
  • Take Bus 2, 8 and Bus 13 to the Stop of Architectural Art Square (建筑艺术广场站). Then walk to the square.

  • Tourists can visit the square for free.
  • If you’d like to visit Saint Sophia Cathedral and Jewish New Synagogue, you’d need to pay 15 CNY per person and 25 CNY per person respectively.
