What to expect at Solitary Beauty Peak

Solitary Beauty Peak has 306 stone steps to walk up to the top. On the way up, you will find several old temples and 136 pieces of stone inscriptions among which the oldest one was carved in the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907).

At the eastern foot of the peak lies Crescent Pond. The Snow Cave is situated at the north-western foot, facing the pond. With white walls and an area of 180 square meters, it is 3 meters tall and 32 meters deep.

Along the way up to the top of the peak, Xuanwu Pavilion, Avalokitesvara Hall, Sanke Temple and Three Gods Temple reflect the Buddhist culture in ancient times in Guilin. On the top of the peak, you will see the old Solitary Beauty Pavilion. In addition, the panoramic views of Guilin City on fine days will be a feast for eyes and mind. On the top, you will find that no buildings in the city are taller than the peak. It was said that in ancient times, if other buildings were taller than the peak, the prospect of Jingjiang Princes would be influenced negatively. Nowadays, the unwritten rule is being applied.

Some of the stone inscriptions show some historical matters. The inscription of the character of ‘寿’ at the southern hillside was carved in 1895. The character was written by Empress Dowager Cixi on her sixtieth birthday and sent to the then provincial governor of Guangxi, Zhang Liangui. The carvings beside the character illustrate some on the political tendency in the 1890s.
