What is the Shuiguan Great Wall of China ?

Located 40 kilometers northwest of Beijing, the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) is the eastern section of the Great Wall of China (Badaling). It was cut off due to the construction of China’s first self-designed Jing-Zhang Railway.

 

​The Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) was built under the supervision of Qi Jiguang in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644).

What to expect at the Shuiguan Great Wall of China

Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) was opened to the public in 1995. It is located at the mouth of the valley along the shape of the mountain. From the place where the city gate near the waters (the arrow tower), the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) appears the shape of “V”. The city gate also functions as an arrow tower, which is rare in the construction of the Great Wall of China.

Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) starts from “Chuanzi No.1” in the east and ends at Jingzhang Railway in the west. The west section is not steep with a short distance. Lots of visitors like to explore this section. It is also suitable for the elderly, children, and physically weak people. The east section is steeper with a long distance, which is ideal for those who enjoy adventures.

 

Walk for 3 kilometers westward, you will see the Jingzhang Railway and the railway with a shape of the Chinese character of “人”. You also could explore Zhengguan Arrow Tower. The tower is 15.63 meters tall. In addition to the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan), you also can discover other sites around it, such as Stone Buddha Temple, Genghis Khan Palace, Great Wall Forest, etc.

Best time to visit the Shuiguan Great Wall of China

Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) presents different appearances in four seasons. If you would like to enjoy the amazing maple leaves, it is suggested that you visit it from the end September to the early November.

 

The best months to visit the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan) are from March to June and from September to November.

 

How to get to the Shuiguan Great Wall of China
There is only one public bus from Beijing to the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan). Therefore, there are only a few options.
  • Rent a vehicle from Beijing. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 919 from Desheng Gate to the Stop of the Great Wall of China (Badaling) (八达岭长城站). Then, walk to the Great Wall of China (Shuiguan).

  • Opening hours: 06:30-17:00 (April 1 – October 31); 07:30—16:30 (November 1 – March 31)
  • As at 8th October 2020, entrance pricing is 40 CNY per person; the elder above 60 years old (60 years old included) are charged 20 CNY per person; children under 1.2m tall (1.2m tall included) are free of charge.
