Shanghai Museum has 11 special halls and three exhibition halls With an exhibition area of 2,800 square meters. There are nearly one million pieces of cultural relics in the museum, including 120,000 pieces of fine cultural relics. The museum features bronze wares, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings.

Shanghai Museum has a total exhibition area of 12,000 square meters. You can admire more than 400 pieces of the ancient Chinese bronze wares and around 120 pieces of the ancient Chinese sculptures such as the old sculptures in the North Wei Dynasty (386 – 534) and stone sculptures in the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907) on the ground floor. The ancient Chinese ceramics, such as the painted pottery and gray pottery of the Neolithic Age, the primitive celadon of the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC – 1046 BC) and Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC – 256 BC) and the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the celadon of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 – 220), and the tri-coloured glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty are on display on the first floor.
On the second floor, you will find the typical calligraphy masterpieces throughout the history of China, more than 120 pieces of fine paintings from the Tang Dynasty to the modern times which feature a deep tradition and a unique ethnic style, and 500 pieces of the imperial seals in ancient China. On the third floor, more than 600 pieces of national handicrafts such as national costumes, batik and weaving, coins in the history of China, more than 100 pieces of exquisite furniture in the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing (1644 – 1912) Dynasty, and a variety of jade wares are on display to visitors.

The best time to visit Shanghai Museum is in the morning during the opening hours as it always takes 3 – 4 hours to explore it.
How to get to the Shanghai Museum
- Rent a vehicle to the museum. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 112, 312 and Bus 145 to the Stop of People’s Square (人民广场站). Then, walk to the museum.
- Take Metro Line 1, 2 and Line 8 to theStop of People’s Square (人民广场站). Then, walk to the museum.
Additional Shanghai Museum Travel Advice
- Opening hours: 09:00 – 17:00 (Tuesday – Sunday, it is closed on Monday) (The visitors are not allowed to enter the museum from 16:00pm).
- Admission fee: free
- The museum offers the charged multi-languages audio-guides, including English, French, Japanese, German, Korean, Spanish, and Italian. The deposit for the audio-guide is 400 CNY per set and the rental for it is 40 CNY per set.
- Up to 8,000 visitors are allowed to visit the museum per day.
