Located at No. 215, Wenmiao Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai Confucian Temple was originally built in 1294. It’s very popular in Shanghai and even around China. Since May 1999, the temple has been open to the public. With national characteristics, the layout of the Shanghai Confucian Temple complex is rigorous.

What to expect at the Shanghai Confucian Temple
Shanghai Confucian Temple had experienced several movements. Eventually, it was rebuilt at the location of today. Two longitudinal axes run through the temple. One is from the Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall to Chongsheng Ancestral Hall. This axe is the sacrifice line of the Confucian Temple. The other is from Learning Gate, Yi Gate, Minglun Hall to Zunjing Pavilion. It is the Learning Palace line. In ancient China, Shanghai Confucian Temple was the highest institution in Shanghai.
The temple features the strong garden style of the regions south of the Yangtze River. You will find Lingxing Gate, Sanding Bridge, Dacheng Temple, lotus pool and other types of plants at the temple. In addition, you can see the wooden statues of Confucius, Yanzi and Zengzi, the old chime cast batween 1862 and 1875 and more than 300 pairs of couplet inscription in the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1912) Dynasties.
Exhibitions of teapots, stone and stone carvings, as well as the exhibition of four major inscriptions, such as the Analects of Confucius, couplets in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Shanghai’s Jinshi of the county level in ancient China, and the old Monuments are regularly held at the temple. All these have Reflected the traditional Chinese cultural thoughts. On Sundays, many visitors explore the old books trading market at the Dacheng Hall Square.

How to get to the Shanghai Confucian Temple
There are a few buses near the temple. Therefore, there are a few option.
- Rent a vehicle to the temple. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 24, 18, 911, 451, 789, 66, 715, 775 and Bus 969 to the Stop of Old West Gate (Fuxing East Road) (老西门(复兴东路)站). Then, walk to the temple.
- Take Metro Line 8 and Line 10 to the Stop of Old West Gate (Fuxing East Road) (老西门站). Then, walk to the temple.

- Opening hours for the temple: 09:00 - 17:00 (the tickets are not issued from 16:30).
- Opening hours for the old books trading market: 07:30 - 16:00 on Sundays.
