Phoenix Mosque - one of the most famous mosques in China
Originally built in the Tang Dynasty (617 – 908), the Phoenix Mosque was unfortunately destroyed in the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279). In 1281, the then well-known Muslim, Ala’ al-Din (? – 1313) organized the reconstruction of the mosque. The name is called after the plan of the mosque.

What to expect at Phoenix Mosque
Since the reconstruction in 1281, Phoenix Mosque has experienced several renovations and expansions. The last renovation took place in 1953.
The mosque is surrounded by tall brick walls. The main buildings are the entrance hall, the auditorium, and the main hall. The main hall was built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271 – 1368). It is connected by three domes to form a rectangular brick structure without a beam. Looking from the outside, it is fitted with a tented roof. The roof is a fusion of the traditional Chinese style and the Western style. The main hall is connected by arches. You’ll see the well-preserved paintings inside and one wooden carving with the Koran on created in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) while the exterior walls are painted white.

The best time to visit the mosque is in the morning.
The best months to visit are from March to October.
How to get to Phoenix Mosque
There is no direct bus to the mosque. The only option is to rent a vehicle.

- Opening hours: 08:00 – 17:00
- As at 9th October 2020, non-Muslim are not permitted to visit the main hall.
- Please don’t wear shorts, miniskirt, minidress or slipper in the mosque.
- Please keep quiet.
