What is Peking University?
Founded in 1898, Peking University was the first national comprehensive university in China and was the highest educational administration in China at that time.

​As the center of the new cultural movement and the birthplace of the “May 4th” Movement, the earliest birthplace of dissemination of Marxism and democratic scientific thoughts in China, and the earliest base of activities of the Chinese Communist Party, Peking University has made irreplaceable contributions to the rejuvenation and liberation of the nation, the construction and development of the country.

What to expect at Peking University

With numerous old buildings, Peking University has a long history. It is around 1.5 kilometers wide and 1.5 kilometers long. The north part of the campus is the former site of Yanjing University and the location of the royal garden. It is centered on the Unnamed Lake and is surrounded by many ancient buildings. In the south part, the various teaching buildings stand, such as the Centennial Hall and Guanghua Building.

The recommended route is as follows.
Enter the southeast gate. Explore the buildings in the teaching area, walk northward along Wusi Road, visit Guanghua College and the Centennial Hall. Along the Wusi Road, you can walk to the east bank of the Unnamed Lake where the main landscape of Peking University is concentrated. Boya Pagoda is another symbol for Peking University. Here, you also can visit the statue of Cai Yuanpei, the Tomb of Edgar Snow, etc.

 

You can explore many old buildings in Jing Garden. It is the largest lawn in Peking University. It is also an important entertainment place for teachers and students during their leisure time. Young people often come here to sit and play guitar. After visiting the Unnamed lake and Jing Garden, you can walk forward the West Gate. You can explore some old antique buildings in the small gardens near the gate. Finally, you can leave the campus via the West Gate.

 

Peking University has five departments of humanities, science, social sciences, information and engineering, and medicine, and Shenzhen Research Institute. The disciplines cover all disciplines except military and agriculture.

The best time to visit Peking University is in the morning during its opening hours. Peking University is only open to the public on weekends and during holidays.

 

How to get to Peking University

There are many buses passing by Peking University. Therefore, there are many options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the university. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 332, 333, 584, 608, 302, 641, 913, 307, 355, 365, 498, 549, 579, 601, 614, 681, 696, 697, 699, 717, 982, 331, 365, 375, 429, 438, 562, 579, 594, 982, 307, 375, 508, Te 19 (特19), Te 18 (特18), Te 4 (特4), Te 6 (特6), Yuntong 106 (运通106), Yutong 114 (运通114), Yuntong 118 (运通118), Yuntong 124 (运通124), Yuntong 110 (运通110) and Yutong 105 (运通105) to the Stop of West Gate of Peking University (北京大学西门站), Stop of Zhongguancun Xi (中关村西站), Stop of Zhongguanyuan (中关村园站), Stop of Zhongguanyuan North (中关园北站), Stop of Zhongguancun North (中关村北站) or Stop of Lanqiying (蓝旗营站).

Additional Peking University Travel Advice

  • Opening hours for the weekends and holidays: 08:30 – 11:30 and 14:00 – 16:30.
  • Admission fee: free
  • During the summer and winter holidays, Mondays are not open to the public. In case of school breaks, classes, important events or extreme weather, it is not open to the public either.
  • It is required that the individual visitors book the admission to the university via the WeChat of “Visit Peking University” (参观北大) on WeChat 7 days prior to the visit date with personal passports details.
  • Only 3,000 visitors can explore the campus per day with 1,500 persons for the morning and 1,500 persons for the afternoon.
  • The visitors are required to enter the campus via East Gate.
  • The visitors are required to leave the campus via West Gate.
  • Visitors are required to present the passports at the entrance
