Covering an area of around 5 x hectares, the Nanjing Presidential Palace is acclaimed the largest and best-preserved building complex in Modern China. Alongside modern buildings, it also features the Chinese classical gardens in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

What to expect at Nanjing Presidential Palace

Since the Modern Times, Nanjing Presidential Palace had played a significant role in history of China. It was originally built in early Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). The palace has witnessed the history from the Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1942), through the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851 – 1864) to the Republic of China (1912 – 1949).

 

The central area offers an gate, the landmark in the Republic of China. In the area, you’ll also find the buildings in the Qing Dynasty, such as Dongchao and Xichao Houses. The main hall has a layout of the Chinese character of “工”. The meeting room is the place where Chiang Kai-shek, and Li Zongren took a short rest and met guests. President Office is also located in the central area. All of the furniture is set originally.

In the western area, you’ll be appealed by Xi Garden. It originally worked as the garden of the Han Emperor Palace in early Ming Dynasty. The garden is typical of its kind in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Exquisite pavilions with cornices and carvings can be found there. The Office of Interim President was built in the French Renaissance style.

The eastern area is the place where the executive offices and the stable in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. You’ll also find other ruins of the period in the area.

Best time to visit Nanjing Presidential Palace

If you don’t want to experience the crowd, the best time to visit is in the early morning or late afternoon.

The best months to visit are from March to October.

How to get to the Nanjing Presidential Palace

Several buses pass by the spot. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the palace. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 29, 44, 65, 20, 304 or Bus 202 to the Stop of Zongtongfu (总统府站).

Additional Nanjing Presidential Palace Travel Advice

  • Opening hours: 08:30 – 18:00 (March 1 – October 14) and 08:30 – 17:00 (October 15 – February 28/29). It is closed on Mondays.
  • As at 15th October 2020, the entrance pricing to the palace is 40 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included) and 70 years old (70 years old not included) are charged 20 CNY per person; children between 1.2m tall (1.2m tall included) and 1.5m tall (1.5m tall not included) are charged 20 CNY per person; children under 1.2m tall (1.2m tall not included) and the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are free of charge.   • It is not suggested that you visit it on holidays as it is always crowded.
  • The palace offers English interpretation service for an additional fee. For the group of 1 to 5 persons, the pricing is 150 CNY in total; For the group of 6 to 10 persons, the pricing is 200 CNY in total; For the group of 11 to 20 persons, the pricing is 230 CNY in total. The duration is 1 hour.
