The Nanjing Ming Palace Museum just stands on the ruins of Nanjing Ming Palace. Therefore, you can explore the two spots during the same period of time.
Originally built in 1366, Nanjing Ming Palace was the largest palace complex at that time. With an area of around 101 hectares, it was unfortunately destroyed at wars in the later dynasties. At last, just several old city walls and city gates survive.

Nanjing Ming Palace Museum on the ruins offers a good chance to get a little acquainted with the palace’s history. Several precious exhibits found in the ruins are well-preserved there. The restored map of the original Nanjing Ming Palace presents the large scale of the palace. Original pictures by foreigners in late Qing Dynasty reflects the grandeur. In addition, you’ll see the exquisite ceramics, and calligraphy and painting works in the museum.
Best time to visit the Nanjing Ming Palace Museum
The museum is not so popular among tourists. Thus, you can visit it any time during the opening hours.
The best months to visit are from April to October.
How to get to Nanjing Ming Palace Museum
Several buses pass by the museum. Thus, there are several options.
- Rent a vehicle to the ruins. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Metro Line 2 to the Stop of Minggugong (明故宫站). Then, walk to the museum.
- Take Bus 17, 65, 115, or Bus 118 to the Stop of Minggugong (明故宫站). Then, walk to the museum.
- Take Bus 5, 34 or Bus 55 to the Stop of East Minggugong (明故宫东站). Then, walk to the museum.
Additional Nanjing Ming Palace Museum Travel Advice
- Opening hours: 09:00 – 17:00 (Tuesday – Sunday). It is closed on Mondays.
- As at 15th October 2020, tourists can visit the museum for free.
