Nanjing Confucius Temple is composed of Confucius Temple, Study Palace and Jiangnan Examination Hall. From the Six Dynasties (222 – 589) to the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912), it was the largest traditional market across China.

What to expect at the Nanjing Confucius Temple
Nanjing Confucius Temple in the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing Style was originally built in 337. Later, it had been destroyed for four times and rebuilt for five times. The last reconstruction took place in 1984. Originally built in 1575, the 110-meters-long screen wall is the longest in China.
Every lunar 1st and 15th in ancient times, Xiucai usually came to the Study Palace to get instructions from local renowned lecturers.
Lingxing Gate is composed of three stone archways walls of which are decorated with beautiful peony reliefs. Dacheng Hall is the main hall in the temple. In the middle of the hall is the largest portrait of Confucius across the country. You’ll see the ancient chimes more than 2,500 years old and other ancient musical instruments there. If you’re lucky enough, you may be able to enjoy the live music show in the hall. In the court of the temple stands the largest bronze statue of Confucius surrounded by his twelve disciples. The statue weighs 2,500 kilograms.
The nearby snack street features local delicious food, and narrow and long corridors to explore. It is also worth walking along the Qinhuai River especially at night. If you explore the temple during the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival, you’ll be amazed at the exciting folk activities in the area, such as walking on the stilts, shadow plays, Beast Dance, etc.

Best time to visit the Nanjing Confucius Temple

If you’d love to visit the temple and the nearby area for photography purposes, the best time to visit is at night.
The best months to visit are from April to October.

 

How to get to the Nanjing Confucius Temple

Several buses pass by the temple. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the temple. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 1, 4, 7, 30, 31, 40, 44, 49, 62, 166, 202, Y1, Y2 or Bus Y4 to the Stop of Fuzimiao (夫子庙站). Then walk to the temple.
  • Take Metro Line 3 to the Stop of Fuzimiao (夫子庙站). Then walk to the temple.

  • Opening hours for Dacheng Hall: 09:00 – 21:00
  • As at 15th October 2020, the entrance pricing to the Dacheng Hall is 30 CNY per person; children between 1.2m tall (1.2m tall included) and 1.4m tall (1.4m tall not included) are charged 15 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included)and 70 years old (70 years old not included) are charged 15 CNY per person; children under 1.2m tall (1.2m tall not included) are free of charge; the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are free of charge.
