Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum ​- one of the largest mausoleum of Emperors in China

With an area of more than 170 hectares, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is the mutual sleeping place of Chu Yuan-chang, the first emperor in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and his wife, Ma Xiuying (1332 – 1382). Through the construction of 25 years, the mausoleum was eventually completed in 1405. It represents the highest achievement of architecture and stone carving in the early Ming Dynasty.

What to expect at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

With red walls, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is surround by trees. The total length of the red walls is 2.25 kilometers. Although the wooden structures of many buildings there are destroyed, the layout still remains original and the underground palace is still intact. In spring, you can explore the cherry blossom garden there.

Along the winding tomb passage, you’ll see Xiama Archway. Xiama means all the officers are required to get down from a horse. 

Great Golden Gate stands some 750 meters northwest of the archway. It has 3 doors to pass through. Walk on and you’ll see large stone sculptures with the bricks in the Six Dynasties (222 – 589) under along the passage. Due to these bricks, the sculptures haven’t sunken into the ground for more than 600 years. You’ll see one stone lion, camels, Haechi, elephant, kylin and horse on either side. They are situated under ginkgo trees and maples. In autumn, yellow and red leaves make the 600-meters-long section very appealing. During the period, many tourists love to take photos along the section.

Wenwufang Gate is the main entrance of the mausoleum. It has red walls and doors, and yellow glazed tiles. Stele Hall was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912). Five large steles stand there. Behind the Stele Hall is Xiaoling Hall, also called Xiang Hall. The original one was destroyed in the war. The existing one was rebuilt in 1873. Ming Building is situated on the Fang City. The building was the bedroom of Chu Yuan-chang and his wife. The underground palace is the sleeping spot for both of them. With brick walls around, it has a diameter of around 400 meters. The palace hasn’t been dug.

Best time to visit Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

The best time to visit the mausoleum is in the morning.

The best months to visit are from March to November.

How to get to Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

A few buses pass by the mausoleum. Thus, there are a few options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the mausoleum. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Metro Line 2 to the Stop of Xiamafang (下马坊站). Then walk to the mausoleum.
  • Take Bus 20, 203 or Bus 315 to the Stop of Mingxiaoling (明孝陵站). Then walk to the mausoleum.

  • Opening hours: 06:30 – 18:30 (March – November) and 07:00 – 17:30 (December – February)
  • As at 15th October 2020, the entrance ticket for the mausoleum is 70 CNY per person; children between 1.4m tall (1.4m tall not included) and 1.5m tall (1.5m tall not included) are charged 35 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included) and 69 years old (69 years old included) are charged 35 CNY per person; children under 1.4m tall (1.4m tall included) and the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are free of charge.
