Covering an area of 44,000 square kilometers, Mekong Delta, also named Jiulongjiang River Plain, is the largest in Southeast Asia. Home to several modern cities, it is located in the southernmost part of Vietnam, featuring natural beauty to enjoy.

What to expect at the Mekong Delta
At Mekong Delta, you can just rent a local boat to explore various plants along the river. During the journey, you can see some fruits on the tree or find local fishermen doing their daily life on the river. From time to time, several local houses will appear in your sight. If interested, you can disembark the boat and go ashore to explore the village hidden in the woods. If lucky enough, you may encounter locals making local specialties through local traditional methods, such as rice paper, coconut cakes and coconut rolls.
Mekong Delta is home to modern cities, such as Can Tho, the largest city in South Vietnam. Some Chinese tourists compare Can Tho to Guangzhou. Mekong River flows through the city. At the section of the river in Cao Tho, you’ll see the local featured floating market - Cai Rang. Floating market is also a great option to know some about the local life. Hundreds of boats filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and fruits run on the river. Can Tho is a combination of traditions and modernity.
Can Gio is great for those nature lovers. Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is declared by the UNESCO. It is endowed with rich wetland ecosystem. You’ll find attractive mangrove forests there.
Ben Tre is well-known for its handmade coconut candy. It is rich in coconuts on the islands across rivers. You can pay a visit to orchards there and walk around the islands to experience local culture.
If you don’t want to see the crowds in Vietnam, you can explore the less-known Vung Tau with many beaches. It is surrounded with seas in three directions. At the southeast and south part of the peninsula, you’ll find beautiful beaches.

Best time to visit the Mekong Delta
If you’d like to enjoy a quiet environment, it is suggested that you visit the Mekong Delta in its low season, the rainy season from June to September. Or you can visit it from March to April and from October to December.
How to get to the Mekong Delta
There are direct buses from Ho Chi Minh City to the delta. Alternatively, you can rent a vehicle to the area.
