What is Luodai Ancient Town?
Originally built during the Three Kingdoms Period (220 – 280), Luodai Ancient Town has been home to Hakkas for thousands of years. Visitors can experience Hakka culture there and explore the Old Street with a history of more than one thousand years, the old shops in the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing (1644 – 1912) Dynasties lining the street and the well-preserved Hakka residences.

What to expect at Luodai Ancient Town

Luodai Ancient Town is composed of the core protection zone, Jinlong Lake Scenic Area (金龙湖景区) and Baosheng Village (宝胜村) – Hakka original ecological village. Visitors can walk around the Old Street. The some 8-meters-wide and 1,200-meters-long street consists of one main street and seven alleys with various kinds of shops built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Numerous old guild halls in the town show the characteristics of Hakka.

Visitors can explore Hakka Tujia Museum (客家土楼博物馆) with collections of The intangible cultural heritage of Hakka, such as New Year Paintings, clay sculptures, and bamboo-woven ware. If interested, you can climb Luodai Great Wall to enjoy the bird eye’s view of the town.

In addition, you can refresh themselves in one of the tea houses. If lucky enough, you could appreciate the Hakka festivals during your trip in the town as Hakka celebrates many festivals around the year, such as Fire Dragon Festival during the Spring Festival and Water Dragon Festival between July and August.

Best time to visit Luodai Ancient Town

If you are planning to visit Luodai Ancient Town for photography purposes, the best time to visit is by 10:00am on weekdays as there can be lots of visitors after 10:00am.

 

You can visit Luodai Ancient Town at any time around the year except public holidays and weekends in China. It is a subtropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 16-17 degree centigrade there.

 

How to get to Luodai Ancient Town

There are direct buses from Bus Station of New South Gate in Chengdu (成都新南门汽车站) to Luodai Ancient Town. Therefore, there are only a few options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the town from Chengdu. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take a direct bus from Bus Station of New South Gate in Chengdu to the town.
  • Take Bus 2, Bus 4, Bus 10, Bus 58, Bus 71, Bus 81, Bus 92, Bus 101, Bus 122 and Bus 304 in the Chengdu City to the Stop of Wugui Bridge (五桂桥站). Then, transfer to Bus 219 for the Stop of Luodai Transport Hub for Passengers (洛带客运中心站).

  • The Luodai Great Wall is very steep. It takes around 2 hours uphill.
  • As at 7th October 2020, entrance pricing for the Luodai Great Wall is 10 CNY per person.
