Originally built in 514, Linggu Temple is located around 1.5 kilometers east of Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s Mausoleum. It is well-known for the largest Wuliang Hall across China. It is composed of Jingang Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Wuliang Hall, Wufang Hall, Pilu Hall, Avalokitesvara Pavilion, etc.

What to expect at Linggu Temple

Linggu Temple is also famous for its amazing views of the fireflies at night in summer. Thousands of fireflies fly around the temple at night in July and August. They flow on the grass, leaves, across the old bridge and other Chinese classical buildings in the area. It is stunning.

From late October to late November, Linggu Temple is hidden in the red, green and golden leaves. Walk to the top of Linggu Pagoda with green glazed tiles and you’ll appreciate the gorgeous natural beauty. If interested, you can also try the vegetarian noodles in the temple which is spoken highly of by visitors who have tasted. In addition, the pricing is just 10 CNY per person as at 23rd December 2019.

Linggu Temple features Xuan Zang Monk (602 – 664) Memorial Hall. Xuan Zang (602 – 664) was an eminent monk in the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907). The relics of his parietal bone is well-preserved in the pagoda.

Names of martyrs from the Revolution of 1911 to the Northern Expedition (1926 – 1927) are carved on the inner wall of the Wuliang Hall. The hall is the only one original building in the Ming Dynasty that has survived in the war. The three glaze pagodas on the roof are Lamaist pagodas.

Best time to visit the Linggu Temple

If you’d like to visit the temple for photography purposes, the best time to visit is at sunset.

The best months to visit are from March to Novemb

How to get to the Linggu Temple

Unfortunately, there is no direct bus to the temple. The only option is to rent a bus.

  • Opening hours: 06:30 – 18:00 (March – November); 07:00 – 17:30 (December – February)
  • As at 15th October 2020, the entrance pricing to the temple is 35 CNY per person; children between 1.4m tall (1.4m tall included) and 1.5m tall (1.5m tall not included) are charged 17.5 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included) and 70 years old (70 years old not included) are charged 17.5 CNY per person; children under 1.4m tall (1.4m tall not included) and the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are free of charge.
