What is Leshan Old City Walls?
Old City Walls in Leshan includes 2,600 meters of the wall built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and 400 meters in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912). In the ancient times, 17 city gates stood. Nowadays, only 4 of them are well-preserved.

What to expect at the Leshan Old City Walls
The original purpose of the construction of the Old City Walls in Leshan was to control flood. Leshan was called Jiazhou before. Therefore, locals always call the walls Jiazhou Old City Walls. The existing outer city wall is about 500 meters long and 5 meters high. The 4 well-preserved city gates are Renhe Gate (人和门), Xingfa Street Gate (兴发街门), Chengxuan Bridge Gate (承宣桥门) and Pingjiang Gate (平江门).They all stand along the river. The bottom of the outer city was built with red sandstone, but the arches of the city gates and the battlements of the city walls were built with blue bricks.
The wall is 3,500 meters long, 5.3 – 25 meters high and 3.5 meters wide on the top, the existing inner city wall offers four preserved gates to explore – Lizheng Gate (丽正门), Huijiang Gate (会江门), Gongchen Gate (拱宸门) and Xianyu Gate (育贤门). The four city gates were built with red sandstone. In addition, visitors can also admire the Longshen Temple On the north part of the inner city wall. Some old trees grows on the walls as well.

The best months to visit Old City Walls in Leshan are from from March to May and from September to October as summer is very hot there.

 

How to get to Leshan Old City Walls
Old City Walls are located in downtown Leshan. Therefore, there are several options.
  • Rent a vehicle to the walls from Chengdu or Leshan. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take any of buses which pass by the walls in Leshan.
