What to expect at the Kinmen IslandsKinmen Islands look like a butterfly stretching wings in the sea. Situated in the northwest of Lieyu Island, Hujingtou War History Museum introduces the battles of Daerdan, Nine Three, and Eight Two Three. You can also appreciate the landscape across the strait via a high-powered telescope.
Kinmen Islands are home to more than 150 villages. You’ll find hundreds of houses in the style of Southern Fujian although the islands are actually ruled by Taiwan. You can walk around some seaside villages, especially Shuitou Village. In the village, you Juguang Tower, one of the must-visit spots on the islands, is a castle-style structure. On the tower, you can overlook Jiangong Island, Lieyu Island and views across the strait. Exhibits in the tower also tell the natural resources, history and the current situation of Kinmen Islands. It is also worth exploring Zhaishan Tunnel, the former military base. It is composed of one tunnel and one watercourse. The tunnel is 101 meters long, 6 meters wide and 3.5 meters tall while the A-shaped watercourse is 357 meters long, being able to accommodate 42 boats. Nowadays, tourists are permitted to visit the tunnel. Mashan Observatory Building is the nearest spot to mainland China when the tide goes out. In the past, it was a prohibited military zone but now, it is opened to the public. Covering an area of more than 3,700 hectares, Kinmen Park attracts migratory birds every autumn and winter. If you visit the park in the two seasons, you may see various birds enjoying themselves there. Kenmen Ci Lake is also a great spot on the island to enjoy birdwatching. In addition, it features the stunning sunrise in the early morning. At dusk, you can walk along the lake to wait for the gorgeous sunset. Kinmen Folk Culture Village presents interesting and colorful local customs as well. |

How to get to the Kinmen Islands
The only option to the islands is to take a boat from Xiamen. The journey takes around 40 minutes long.
