What to expect at Kaili
The most popular ethnic minority village among tourists, especially domestic Chinese tourists in Kaili is Xijiang Miao Village. The village is the largest Miao village in China and even across China. With the development of tourism, it is very touristy there. Though, night view at the village is amazing.
If you’d like to explore a quiet Miao Village, you can go to Qingman Miao Village, Jidao Miao Village or Zhouxi Miao Village. Compared to Xijiang Miao Village, none of the villages is crowded with tourists. Thus you can experience a more authentic local tradition at all of the villages.
If interested, you can also pay a visit to Biasha Miao Village, the last ethnic minority is authorized to carry guns in China. The villagers usually present local dancing to you at the village gate or the specific square. In addition, you can see local men villagers cutting the hair with an reaping hook.
Situated around 21 kilometers from Kaili City, Matang Gejia Village is underdeveloped. Gejia women wear a suit of distinctive costumes. The main color of the costume is red. The hat resembles the sun, the silver hairpin stands for an arrow, the silver circle is a bow. The upper outer garment has a similar appearance to the armour. The patterns on the skirts, and belts depict the history that the the ancestors with 9,999 soldiers fought with the invaders. Gejia people don’t have their own written characters. The women villagers are good at embroidering, batik, and weaving. From an early age, they learn these skills.
Shilong Village is home to Xijia People for hundreds of years. There are just about 3,00 persons at the village. The people have their own language, and well-preserved life style and customs. The costume is a fusion of batik, embroidery, brocade, cross-stitch work and silver ornaments.
National Museum of Qiandongnan Prefecture offers you a great chance to get a little acquainted with the costumes, traditions and customs, wedding and funeral cultures, old articles of daily use, farming tools, etc of the main ethnic minorities from the Yuan (1271 - 1368) through the Ming (1368 - 1644) to the Qing (1644 - 1912) Dynasties.

The best months to visit Kaili are from April to October.
