Jincheng Ancient Town - the old capital of the Ancient Dian Kingdom
Jincheng Ancient Town is the old capital of the ancient Dian Kingdom (278 BC – 109 BC). Surrounded by mountains in three directions, the town is the birthplace and center of the ancient Dian (Yunnan) culture. The old buildings in the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing (1644 – 1912) Dynasties and Dian culture are well-preserved at the town.

Eight streets, including the Upper West Street, Lower West Street and Guanjing Street at Jincheng Ancient Town, form the main layout of the Chinese character of “田”. Tens of alleys are attached to these main streets. It is said that the layout of the streets has been preserved since the Ming Dynasty. The old houses are decorated with flower reliefs, exquisitely-carved windows and doors.
Old stone steles could be found around the town. They tell the historical matters, biographies of the historical celebrities, and religious culture. The town offers some 1,100 old wells, which is the largest well group preserved in Yunnan.
If you are interested in the culture of the ancient Dian Kingdom, it is recommended to visit the Cultural Park of Ancient Dian Kingdom (古滇文化公园) which covers an area of 6.86 hectares. During the holidays, Yunnan Opera is always performed at the old stage at the town. With old buildings and old trees, Panlong Temple is a combination of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism.
Rizhao Peak overlooks Shizhai Mountain which is the resting place for the King in the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC – 8 AD), and Tiannv City (天女城) in honor of the heroine, Lixiu on behalf of her father who beat the rebel army in the Jin Dynasty (266 – 420).

If you would like to experience the local life at the town, the best time to visit is in the morning.
The best months to visit are from March to November.
How to get to Jincheng Ancient Town
There are direct buses to the town at any bus station in Kunming. You could take a direct bus or rent a vehicle to the town.
