What to expect with Jiankou to Mutianyu HikingGreat Wall of China (Jiankou) is the most dangerous and steepest section in Beijing. When hiking through the Great Wall of China (Jiankou), you will be shocked at its steepness and original look. When hiking through some sections of it, you need to use both hands and feet to climb it. Usually, most of the hikers would like to start the hike from Xizhazi Village (西栅子村). For your reference, the route is as follows.
Route: Xizhaizi Village - Beijingjie - Yingfei Daoyang - the Ladder - General Guard the Pass - Jiankou - Xiao Budala - Zhenbei Tower - Niujiaobian - Mutianyu Duration: approx.10 x hours/ Jiankou to Mutianyu (4 -5 x hours) |
It always take one hour to hike from Xizhaizi to Beijingjie. From Beijingjie to Yingfei Daoyang, the first part of the road is easy to walk on. Later, the road becomes a little hard to hike. Even though it is difficult to explore Yingfei Daoyang, it is ideal for photographing. It is very steep and the bricks of the eastern wall have gone for years. After you hike through the Ladder, the road is easy to walk on.
From Jiankou to Xiao Budala, the terrain is complex and dangerous as many sections of the wall are situated on the cliff. Even some sections of the wall have fallen down for tens of years. Pass by Xiao Budala and you will reach the last watchtower - Zhenbei Tower. After reaching Niujiaobian, you will enter the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu). The Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) is easy to hike.

As it always takes several hours to hike through any one of the routes, the best time to hike through the Great Wall of China is in the morning.

How to get to the starting point of Jiankou to Mutianyu Hiking
There is no direct bus from Beijing to Great Wall of China (Jiankou). Therefore, there are only a few options.
- Rent a vehicle from Beijing. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 916 at Dongzhimen to the Stop of Yingbin Road (迎宾路站). Then, transfer to Bus 862 to the Stop of Yujiayuan (于家园站, there are 2 stops called Yujiayuan. Please get off at the second one). At last, transfer to Bus H25 to the Stop of Xizhazi Village (西栅子村).

- As at 8th October 2020, entrance pricing for the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu) is 40 CNY per person; the elder between 60 years old (60 years old included) and 65 years old (65 years old not included) are charged 20 CNY per person; children under 1.2m tall (1.2m tall not included) are free of charge.
