Located in the northwest of Hunan, the Wulingyuan Scenic Area is a must-visit attraction in Hunan, comprising Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve and Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve. It features different amazing views around the year.

 

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the most popular in Hunan. It offers the Golden Whip Stream to explore on foot, Yuanjiajie – well-known for Avatar, and Yangjiajie, a newly develop area in the park. Golden Whip Stream features the most breathtaking views in the park. There are roads from Yuanjiajie to Yangjiajie where you could see hundreds of monkeys if you are lucky enough.

 

In Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, the must-visit spot is Ten-mile Gallery. You could explore it on a small train or with your feet. The gallery features tens of rocks with different shapes to enjoy. After the rain in spring, summer and at the early-autumn, views of clouds around Xihai are breathtaking as well.

 

Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve features spectacular views of clouds and mist. After the rain, mist floats around the mountain, creating a paradise for keen photographers. You could explore Laowuchang, Shijiayan, Chapanta and Mandarin Duck Stream.

Located in Sanguansi, Cili, Zhangjiajie, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is famed for the longest and tallest glass bridge. Walk on the transparent bridge, and you might feel that your adrenaline rises quickly. The canyon is home to tens of waterfalls, one old rattan which hugs large part of rock wall and caves. If you walk long and feel a little tired, you could take a toboggan which is 600 meters long. To explore the entire opened area in the canyon, it takes around 2.5 hours at least.

Located 8 kilometers north of Zhangjiajie City, Tianmen Mountain features the highest natural cave in the world. The cave has an elevation of around 3,000 meters. The mountain also features a winding mountain road with 99 turns to experience. The cableway on the mountain is the largest in the world. The plank road between two cliffs is a challenge for you. When you get to the top of the mountain, there are 999 steps leading you to the Tianmen Cave. After visiting the cave, you could take a mountain elevator down to the top.

Baofeng Lake in Zhangjiajie is surrounded by mountains. It is 2.5 kilometers long. Two islets lie in the lake, making the lake much more unique. The ticket for the lake includes a boat cruise on the lake. During the cruise, locals in Tujia costumes will sing Tujia’s songs. After the cruise, you could hike through the forest on the mountain if you are interested. The waterfall in the area presents stunning views to admire.

Located 7 kilometers of Suoxiyu Town, Huanglong Cave offers dry and water caves to explore. There are 4 layers in the cave. The total length of the opened section in the cave is 3.2 kilometers long. In the cave, you will find stalagmites, stone curtains, stone pillars, stone flowers, stone pearls and stone corals. In addition, you could explore the cave on a boat in the cave.

Originally built in 1556, Fenghuang Ancient Town is home to 28 nationalities. It offers around 120 old buildings in the Ming (1368 – 1644) and Qing (1644 – 1912) Dynasties and old temples, and pavilions. Tuo River divides the town into two parts. The town features many wooden hotels transformed from local old houses which stand by the river. If you are planning to stay overnight there, you could appreciate breathtaking views at night there.

Furong Old Town has been home to Tujia people since the Qin Dynasty (221 – 207 BC). It is dotted with the old houses in Tujia’s style. The old bluestone street there is even lined with old buildings. Some shops also offer local handicrafts to pick. In the local folk museum, exhibits, such as beds with carvings, and old hand-operated cotton machines will tell you some of the local culture and the local traditions.
