Originally built in 1906, Heilongjiang Museum features the Baroque style. It worked as a Russian shopping mall at the very beginning which was well-known at that time. The building is divided into an exhibition hall with an area of 3,000 square meters and an store room with 3,000 square meters as well.

What to expect at Heilongjiang Museum

Heilongjiang Museum is the collection center of historical relics, artworks, and animal and plant specimens in Heilongjiang Province.

At the Heilongjiang Historical Relics Exhibition Gallery, you’ll get a little acquainted with the prehistorical culture, Bohai culture and Jin culture through 935 pieces of exhibits including pictures, costumes in the Jin Dynasty (1115 – 1234) calligraphy and paintings.

The copper sitting dragon is a combination of dragon, lion, dog and Chinese unicorn. The well-preserved copper mirror in the Jin Dynasty presents the then landscape in Heilongjiang. The stone carving – Flying Apsaras reflects the Nvzhen culture was influenced by the then culture in the Central China.

Natural Exhibition Gallery presents more than 1,000 pieces of specimen, including bone fossils of Heilongjiang Hadrosaurus, woolly rhinoceros, Przewalski’s horse, bos Primigenius, and Songhua River Mammoth all excavated after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In addition, you’ll see the specimen of Siberian Tigers, red-crowned cranes, and other endemic animals.

There are well-preserved calligraphy works and paintings in the museum to appreciate as well.

Best time to visit Heilongjiang Museum

You could visit the museum any time during the opening hours as it is not well-known among tourists.

The best months to visit the museum are from May to September.

How to get to Heilongjiang Museum

Several buses pass by the museum. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the museum. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 2, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 21, 28, 31, 32, 33, 55, 63, 64, 74, 81, 92, 94, 101, 103, 107, 108, 109, 110, 115, or Bus 120 to the Stop of Bowuguan (博物馆站). Then walk to the museum.
