What to expect at the Gulangyu Organ Museum

The Gulangyu Organ Museum is decorated with hundreds of organs. The best-known is China’s largest organ, Casavant Pipe Organ. It is 13 meters tall and 12.5 meters wide. The project was completed in 1917 in US. It has 7,451 pipes and 133 stop keys. Tens of professionals from different countries, regions and fields cooperated with one another to complete the recovery work on the organ on the island after the unfortunate fire experienced by the organ in Boston US.

Carillion looking like a wardrobe comes from Australia. The small Dean Street Organ originates from UK. When you see the Chinese organ with a dresser, you may think it was created by China. However, all of the organs were originally made out of China.

Some of the organs there were originally used by the rich in Europe. Some pedal-powered ones were owned by the Western families whose financial conditions were not so good. Some with a mirror in the front were employed in churches in UK and US. Some fitted with two keyboards can be able to create sounds of other musical instruments. You’ll also find one organ with candlesticks which was used at the time when there was no electricity.

One of the highlights at the museum is the Jazz Organ. It looks like an open musical cabinet. More than ten musical instruments, including drum set, accordion, saxophone and trumpet stands in order.
