What are the UNESCO sites in Guilin?
As an international tourist destination, Guilin has been famous all over the world for many decades. Guilin is home to two UNESCO world heritage sites.
Guilin UNESCO Sites
- Guilin Karst (as part of South China Karst)
On 23rd June 2014, Guilin Karst as part of the South China Karst was listed in the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. As an important part of the South China Karst, it represents the final stage of the evolution history of the entire South Karst.
Guilin Karst is situated in the Lijiang River Scenic Zone. It consists of the peak forest landscape (tower shape) and the peak cluster landform (cone). Guilin Karst is divided into two areas. The core area of Putao in Yangshuo covers an area of 2,840 hectares, and the buffer area of Putao has an area of 21,610 hectares. The core area of the Li River is 22,544 hectares, and the buffer area of the Li River is 23,070 hectares.

- Lijiang River Scenic Zone

- Lingqu Canal
On 14th August 2018, Lingqu Cana in Xing’an, Guilin, Lingqu Canal was listed in the World Irrigation Project Heritage. Originally set up in 214 BC under the order of Qin Shi Huang, it is an inter-basin water conservancy project that connects the Xiangjiang River in the Yangtze River Basin and the Li River in the Pearl River Basin. It offered water transport and irrigation function in ancient China. Nowadays, it feeds around 40 kilometers of farmland.

As the oldest existing artificial canal in the world, the main body of the canal is composed of the mouth of ploughshare, big and small balances, north and south canals, barrages, bridges and more. The canal has experienced several renovations since the Qin Dynasty (221 – 207 BC). Lingqu Canal features amazing natural beauty, such the sunset, fog after the rain, and also old buildings, including Sixian Ancestral Temple, Tombs of the Three Generals in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), Wanli Bridge and the like.
