  • Things to bring to Guilin
Rainfall in Guilin is rich. Thus, you could bring an umbrella, and a raincoat. Also, sunglasses and sunscreen cream are necessary in Guilin during the summer months in particular. As Guilin is dotted with hills, it is suggested that you take a pair of sneakers at any time around the year.
  • What to wear in Guilin
If you are planning to visit Guilin between March and April, it is suggested that you bring an outdoor jacket; for May and June, you could bring cool clothing, an umbrella and waterproof clothing; shorts, sunglasses and the sunscreen cream are for July and August in Guilin; From September to November, you could bring long trousers, coats and long shirts; from December to February, it is recommended that you bring cotton-padded clothes and boots. 
  • Train Ticket Booking Advice
The train tickets in China can be booked 30 days prior to the travel date. Trip.com offers the booking service for foreigners. If you are planning to get to Guilin by train during the public holidays in China, it is recommended that you book the ticket as soon as possible. It is better to book 20 days at least prior to the travel date in case there is no tickets available.

  • Money in Guilin
The local currency in China is the Chinese Renminbi (CNY).  Visa and Mastercard debit cards can work well on most of ATMs in Guilin. You could get the best rate through this method. Please let your banks know that you will use your card in China ahead of time in case that you can’t withdraw money on ATM during your stay in China. It is recommended that you exchange some CNY cash at the airport exchange office. Even if the rate may be a little higher, it could save you from trouble if you would like to take a taxi from the airport to your hotel.
  • Phones in China
If your phone service can provide the international service and your phone is unblocked in China, you could use your phone in Guilin. With your unblocked phone in Guilin, you could buy a local SIM card. You can get a local SIM card from 50 CNY (8 USD). You’d better let the staff of the local phone service know that you would like the international call as the cheapest card is not available for the international call.​

  • Driving in Guilin
The international driving licenses are unacceptable in China. Even though you bring your driving license with you in Guilin, you are not allowed to drive a car. However, if you hold the Chinese residence permit over 6 months, you could go to the local vehicle administration office to take an English driving exam with your international driving license. Please be sure to translate your license into Chinese version ahead of time and remember to take the Chinese Version together with your license to the local vehicle administration office. Once passing the exam, you will be offered a Chinese driving license. The license is valid for 10 years.​

Tap water is undrinkable in China while the bottled water is safe for drinking. You could use tap water to brush your teeth, wash your face and take a shower or bath.
  • Best Months to travel to Guilin
The best months to visit Guilin are between the middle of April and the early November. Labour Day-May 1st and the National Day of China-October 1st, are the two golden weeks and the busiest weeks for tourism. The weather and climate is comfortable during the two weeks. Therefore, thousands of tourists always visit Guilin. As a result, the hotel’s booking and the traffic is the busiest. The room rates rise between the two periods as well. It is suggested that you should not pay a visit to Guilin during the two weeks. You could visit Guilin during the off-season to enjoy its beauty. 

The rainy season in Guilin is from April to July. It’s recommended that you set aside one or two days to discover the scenic spots along Li River in case that Li River is in high tide and navigation is stopped by the relative administrations.
