Guilin Facts

Guilin is famous for the natural beauty of the Li River. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. It features the karst landform – hills and caves. Besides the natural scenery, Guilin has various kinds of food, such as Guilin Rice Noodles, Yangshuo beer fish, chilli sauce, Longji bamboo cooked chicken and much more. It also offers various cultures of ethnic minorities to experience.

Facts about Guilin

  • Guilin Location
Guilin lies in the northeast of Guangxi, bordering Hunan and Guilin in the north. The entire Guilin area is composed of Guilin City, Yangshuo, Longsheng where Longji Rice Terraces is situated, Lingchuan, Lipu, Guanyang, Yongfu, Quanzhou, Xing’an, Ziyuan, Pingle and Gongcheng.

Guilin is located around 470 kilometers northwest of Guangzhou. For reference, it takes approximately 2.5 hours from Guangzhou to Guilin and approximately 3.5 hours from Hongkong to Guilin by high-speed train. ​

  • Guilin Climate
Guilin features a subtropical monsoon climate. The climate is mild and the rainfall is abundant. Between April and June, there is always much rain in Guilin. Sometimes, flood attacks Guilin during the period of time.

​It is the hottest in July and August while the coldest in January and February. In winter, it is cold and it may rain a lot for long. Sometimes, it always rains for 7 days and even longer in winter.

Guilin is home to 28 minorities in Guilin, including Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Yao, Dong, covering a sizable percentage of the total population in Guilin.

Guilin is a very safe city in Southern China. Visitors should take general precautions around busy crowds to take care of their personal belongings.
  • Best Months to visit Guilin
It is recommended that you visit Guilin between April and October except the public holidays as the hotel booking, train and flight booking are always the busiest at that time.

When you go shopping in Guilin, we recommend that you buy some local specialties, such as products made of osmanthus flowers, and some famous specialties in Guilin, like dried bean sticks, Guilin chilli sauce, Chinese chestnut, osmanthus flower tea, Longji tea, Nanshan Hill apple-pear, Longsheng Madrin fruits, carp growing in paddy fields, and Lipu taro.

Guilin has various grades of shopping districts. The NIKO NIKO DO Shopping Mall (微笑堂) offers high-end and high-quality articles; Zhengyang Walking Street (正阳步行街) and East West Alley (东西巷) feature the mid-range articles; Xiaoxianggang Commercial District (小香港) and Xichenglu Walking Street (西城路步行街) offers the cost-effective articles.

Restaurant specialties: Various kinds of BBQ, minced pork congee with preserved egg, pork ribs braised in taro, Li River shrimp, fried Yangshuo snail filled with pork and steamed Jiangu Fish.​

  • Xiao Nan Guo Restaurant (小南国)
Restaurant specialties: Steamed chicken in the wood, steamed Jiangu fish, black tofu stewed in casserole, baked pumpkin with salted egg yolk, and steamed bun stuffed with salted egg yolk.

Restaurant specialties: Sweet Melon in orange juice, pork slices with bean sauce, handmade fried dumpling, fried noodles with boneless beef tenderloin and black pepper, burrito filled with shredded potato and deep-fried duck with bread.

Getting to Guilin

Guilin offers a developed transportation network. Tourists can get to Guilin by flight, train and bus. Flights and high-speed trains are the most popular. 
  • Flights to Guilin
Several domestic airlines have opened domestic air routes at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport. You could fly to Guilin from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Wuhan, Tianjin and other main cities in China. There are also a number of international flights to Guilin.
  • Trains to Guilin
There are 4 x train stations in Guilin, Guilin Train Station, Guilin North Train Station, Guilin West Train Station and Yangshuo Train Station. You could take a high-speed train from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hongkong, Beijing, Xi’an or Guiyang and other main cities in China to Guilin as well. 
  • Buses around Guilin
Public transportation in Guilin is well-developed too. There are buses from the center of Guilin to any train station in the city of Guilin. There are also direct buses from Guilin city to Yangshuo, Longsheng, Lingchuan and other counties under the administration of Guilin.
