Golden Temple Kunming - best preserved and largest existing copper temple in China
Originally built in 1602, Golden Temple is named after the scene where it is in the sun, the golden light shines from the temple. The temple was built with copper. Located 8 kilometers from the City of Kunming, Golden Temple lies on the top of Mingfeng Mountain. It is surrounded by green trees.

The Golden Temple weighs 250 tons in total. With double eaves, the temple is in a shape of square. It is 6.7 meter tall, 6.2 meters wide and 6.2 meters deep. The beam columns, brackets, the roof, tiles, curtains, tables, bottles, horizontal inscribed boards, etc. are made of copper. The steps, floors and railings of the Golden Temple are built with chic marble. The city walls, city gates and battlements are built outside the temple. On the second floor of the Golden Temple is a large copper bell with a height of 2.1 meters, a circumference of 6.7 meters, a wall thickness of 15 centimeters and a weight of 14 tons. The bell was cast in 1432.
On the way up to the temple, you will walk through the natural beauty, singing birds and colorful flowers around you. As the Golden Temple is located in Golden Temple National Forest Park which is home to 932 species of wild plants, you could also find a variety of plants and wild animals. If interested, you can explore the tea garden, azalea garden, magnolia garden, etc. At the tea garden, you will see a tea tree, named Wings of the Butterfly camellia which is around 500 to 600 years old. The tree is more than 6.6 meters tall.
Best time to visit the Golden Temple Kunming
If you are planning to visit the Golden Temple for photography purposes, the best time to visit is during the sunset.
The best months to visit are from April to November.
How to get to the Golden Temple Kunming
A few buses pass by the temple. Therefore, there are a few options.
- Rent a vehicle to the temple. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 10, 69, 71, 146, and Bus 47 to the Stop of Jindian Parking Lot (金殿车场) or the Stop of Jindian (金殿站).
