Standing at the heart of Kunming, Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway was originally built in the Period of Xuande (1426 – 1435) in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). The east archway – Golden Horse Archway was named after its location that is near the Golden Horse Mountain. The west archway – Jade Rooster Archway is situated close to the Jade Rooster Mountain. The existing archway was rebuilt in 1998 based on the original style as the original one was pulled down during the Great Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976).

The Golden Horse Archway is located around 30 meters from the Jade Rooster Archway. The tow archways are 12 meters tall and 18 meters wide. Both of the archways are decorated with exquisite patterns and overhanging eaves. Each end of the eaves of the Jade Rooster Archway is decorated with a painted wooden phoenix sculpture.
Reliefs of a running horse and a flying phoenix are carved at the lintels of the two smaller gates at Golden Horse Archway while reliefs of a standing rooster and a flying phoenix are carved at the lintels of the two smaller gates at Jade Rooster Archway. In the evening, the Golden Horse Archway is shone under the golden light and the Jade Rooster Archway is under the white light.

- Rent a vehicle to the archways. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take Bus 3, 4, 62, 90, 98, 213, a1 and Bus k12 to the Stop of Jinmafang (金马坊站).
