One of 13 city gate of the City Wall of Nanjing, Gate of China Nanjing occupies an important role in the history of world’s city wall construction. It was originally completed in 1375. Qinquai River flows before and behind it. It is connected Changgan Bridge in the south and Zhenhuai Bridge in the north.

What to expect at Gate of China Nanjing

Gate of China Nanjing stretches 118.5 meters from east to west and 128 meters from south to north. It is 20.45 meters tall. Three barbicans are connected by four archways. The entire structure has a shape of the Chinese character “目”. Each of gate is fitted with one orgue. Carriages and cavalrymen can go to the wall through gentle bridleways. The bridleway is 11.5 meters wide and 86.1 meters long. 27 holes are used for soldiers to take a rest and store military supplies, food and other goods. The holes can accommodate up to 3,000 soldiers at the same time.

The first city gate is composed of 3 floors. It is 21.45 meters tall. On the second floor is 7 holes with tea houses and other tourist souvenirs. In the middle of the first floor is a corridor with 3 holes on either end. The second to the fourth city gates are two-storey structures. The ground floor is built in bricks while the first floor is a wooden structure. Every brick was carved with the name and nationality of the brick makers. You may see some are still clear while others are unseen. The bricks are 40 – 50 centimeters long, 20 meters wide and 10 meters thick. They weigh 5 kilograms to 15 kilograms.

The best months to visit are from March to October.

How to get to the Gate of China Nanjing

Several buses pass by the gate. Thus, there are several options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the gate. This is the quickest and most direct option.
  • Take Bus 33, 16, 2, 701 or Bus 202 to the Stop of Zhonghuamen (中华门站). Then walk to the gate.
  • Take Metro Line 1 to the Stop of Zhonghuamen (中华门站). Then walk to the gate.
