Originally built in the early Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912), the Couple’s Retreat Garden is named after the true story that the owner and his third wife lived and loved each other in the garden for 8 years after he met his third wife in the regions south of the Yangtze River when he dealt with the lows of life.

What to expect at the Couple's Retreat GardenWith an area of just 8,000 square meters, the Couple’s Retreat Garden is surrounded by waters in three directions. The inner city moat lies in the east, a small lane is situated in the north while the back entrance is fitted with a private dock.
Couple’s Retreat Garden is divided into the East Garden, residence area in the middle and the West Garden. Most of the highlights of the garden are located in the east one. The two yellow stone artificial hills in the East Garden stand out there. One narrow trail separates them. The East Garden is surrounded by buildings, including pavilions, study and corridors. Furniture in the buildings is well preserved. Patterns on doors and windows are also exquisite and impressive. Wu’ai Pavilion is the spot where the owner’s third wife played Guzheng. At the same time, the owner appreciated the live music in Tingqin Pavilion. Between the two structures spans a small wooden bridge connecting the couple. Tenghua Boat is a land boat windows of which are carved with fine patterns. In the West Garden, you’ll find several stunning pavilions along or in the waters. In addition, it is very quiet there just with active animals, including swans, and other species of aquatic birds. They don’t show fear to human beings. The garden offers ideal backgrounds for wedding pictures as well. |

Unfortunately, there is no direct buses passing by the garden. Therefore, the only option is to rent a vehicle.
