What is the Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair was first held in 1957 as a way to exhibit products and trade between China and buyers from all over the world. Nowadays, it is the largest and the most important trade fair throughout China. This trade fair is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the provincial government of Guangdong Province and organized by the China Foreign Trade Centre.
Each year, there are 2 x sessions for the Canton Fair (generally held in Spring and Autumn) and normally approximately 200,000 buyers from all over the world travel to Guangzhou to attend the fair. Unfortunately, for the first time in its history, the Canton Fair was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and moved online as a temporary solution.

Brief History & Overview of the Canton Fair
Since the first China Export Fair (Canton Fair for short) was held in 1957, this trade fair quickly became the main channel for product exports from China. In 1965, the annual export transactions of Canton Fair accounted for over 30% of China's annual export turnover! In the years of 1972 and 1973, it accounted for over 50% of country-wide annual export transactions.
In the spring of 2007 (the 101st Canton Fair), a new exhibition area (Import Area) was established and the Chinese Export Commodities Fair has renamed this trade fair with the full name being the China Import and Export Fair (中国进出口商品交易会). Each year, there are over 24,000 of China’s foreign trade companies joining this trade fair.

Where is the Canton Fair Held?
The Canton Fair is held in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, Southern China. There is a specific area for holding the Canton Fair - Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center (known as Canton Fair Complex or the Pazhou Complex). This is one of the largest and modern exhibition centers in Asia (with 1,185,000 square meters gross exhibition area) and it is located in No. 382, Yuejiang Zhong Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The nearby MTR stations are Pazhou or Xingangdong - specific exits at each MTR station depend on the hall attendees are visiting.
What date(s) is the Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair is generally held on the same dates each year but this can vary (and might change post Covid-19 pandemic!). Normally, Canton Fair dates for each session are as follows:
Phases in Autumn Session: October 15–19 (Phase 1), October 23–27 (Phase 2), October 31- November 4 (Phase 3).

How many days are needed at the Canton Fair?
Ultimately, this depends upon each attendee's preferences for product sourcing or other reasons for attending. Generally, including flights and transit to/from China, most attendees will spend a total time of approximately 5 - 7 days. The Canton Fair Complex at Pazhou is enormous so please allow sufficient time to visit all the different areas.
What are the different phases of the Canton Fair?
During the Canton Fair, there are normally 3 x separate phases during each session and the products typically exhibited during each phases are as follows (subject to change):

Online Canton Fair COVID-19 Pandemic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 127th Canton Fair (15th June 2020 to 24th June 2020) was held online (no in-person attendance). Buyers and exhibitors had registered on the official website of Canton Fair (https://www.cantonfair.org.cn/en/) for joining the 127th Canton Fair. The Canton Fair Host had set up the instant messaging function on the official website, so buyers communicate with exhibitors directly.

Guangzhou Overview
Guangzhou, known as Sui for short, also called ‘City of Flowers’ and ‘City of Rams’, is the capital city of Guangdong Province. Originally named as Chu Ting from 214 BC, now it is the 3rd largest city and known as one of the most important cities, an international commercial center, and a main transportation hub in China.

Being the third largest city in China, Guangzhou has 11 districts in total as follows:

Yuexiu District - this is the oldest district of Guangzhou and it is connected with Baiyun District and Tianhe District. It was the home of administration office of Guangzhou ever since 214 BC when Emperor Qin unified Lingnan and set up the Nanhai Eparchy.

Liwan District – located in the west of Guangzhou city, Liwan District is bordered by Yuexiu District on the east, Baiyun District on the north and northwest and Nanhai District of Foshan City on the west. It is one of the 3 oldest districts of Guangzhou. From Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644), it was an important port for international trade.

Haizhu District – situated in the middle of Guangzhou city, Haizhu District is the main hub for going to Shenzhen, Zhuhai and other PRD cities in Pearl River Delta. It has a convenient water traffic system and there are regular cruises/ships to coastal cities like Shantou, Haikou, Sanya and Xiamen.

Tianhe District – with modern symbolic landmarks such as CITIC Plaza, Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangzhou CTF Finance Center, Pearl River Tower and Tee Mall (the largest shopping mall in Guangzhou), currently Tianhe District is the new city center of Guangzhou. It is also the home field of Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao Football Club.

Baiyun District – named after Baiyun Mountain (a natural attraction in the area), Baiyun District is bordered by Tianhe District and Huangpu District to the east, Nanhai District of Foshan City to the west, Huadu District and Conghua District to the north and Liwan District, Yuexiu District, Tianhe District to the south.

Huangpu District – located in the east of Guangzhou, Huangpu District is a developing industrial district where has many factories and wharves. It is also the home of Guangzhou Port (the largest port in south China).

Nansha District – located in the south of Guangzhou, Nansha District is a state-level new area in Guangzhou. This is an important hub which connecting cities in the Pearl River Delta, as well as Hong Kong and Macau. It has the only deep water wharf (Nansha Port) in western Pearl River Delta.

Panyu District – set in the heart of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Panyu District is known as the important birthplace of Lingnan culture (Lingnan Architectures, Cantonese Opera, Dancing Lion, etc), and it also was the starting point of the Marine Silk Road.

Huadu District – bordered by Conghua District and Baiyun District, Huadu District is located in the north of Pearl River Delta. One of the sub towns in Huadu, Shiling Town (狮岭镇) is known as a major center for the leatherworking industry in China.

Conghua District – Connecting the Pearl River Delta, Conghua District is the largest district of Guangzhou. In Conghua, there are over 100 lakes and the forest coverage rate of the district is 67.2%. In China, Conghua is famous for the hot springs.

Zengcheng District – established in A.D. 201, Zengcheng District is the home of Lychee and now is a developing industrial area of Guangzhou. It is known as the ‘Jean City’ as 60% of the jean products in China from Zengcheng. The jeans are also exported to including U.S.A, United Kingdom, France, Germany and other European countries.

If traveling to/from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport by metro, you’d take Northern extension of Guangzhou Metro Line 3 which is running between Tiyu West Road Station and Airport North Station. The main (and the most cost-effective) transportation method in Guangzhou is traveling by the subway. It is highly recommended to stay in Yuexiu, Tianhe or Haizhu District during Canton Fair. To reach China Import and Export Complex (also known as Pazhou Complex), you can take Line 8 then go to Pazhou Metro Station. (Exit C), it is just a few minute stroll from Pazhou Complex. To make sure you can make full use the online car hiring service, it’d be better to download DiDi from the mobile APP store. You can fill the address of your hotel as well as the address of Canton Fair Complex (No. 382, Yuejiang Zhong Road, Guangzhou) on the Didi APP, and confirm your booking directly. In a few minutes, a private vehicle will be assigned automatically and the driver will just come and pick you up in 5-10 minutes (subjects to the driver’s location when the booking is confirmed). During the Canton Fair, there will be 50 exhibition sections in China Import and Export Fair Complex (known as Canton Fair Complex or Pazhou Complex). Currently, China Import and Export Fair Complex is the largest modernized exhibition center in Asia, it has an indoor exhibition area of 338,000 square meters and an outdoor exhibition area of 43,600 square meters.
Based on the above reasons, you’d spend plenty of time in Canton Fair and it’s suggested you have a basic plan before attending Canton Fair – it is a massive trade show so it’d be more cost-effective to have a rough plan/itinerary in advance. You can check the official website of Canton Fair (https://www.cantonfair.org.cn/en/) which will give you some idea about the available phase(s). Moreover, you’d bring comfortable shoes during Canton Fair. The exhibition center is huge, since you’d spend lots of time in Canton Fair Complex, it is highly recommend to pack comfortable shoes before heading to Guangzhou. And please make sure you’d bring your business cards, a digital camera and a notepad – these can help you to keep the info of the exhibitors and the products you’re interested in. |

The Pearl River is known as the mother river of Guangzhou while the Pearl River Night Cruise is also recognized as one of the must-do activities when visiting Guangzhou. Situated in northeast of Guangzhou, Baiyun Mountain is the most famous mountain in Guangzhou and Guangdong Province. From Baiyun Mountain, visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of Guangzhou city and Pearl River. This is a good spot for hiking and picnic. It’d need a full day exploring this place.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall-Folk Craft Museum (陈家祠)
Originally established from 1888 (Qing Dynasty), currently Chen Clan Ancestral Hall-Folk Craft Museum is the largest and best-preserved ancestral hall in Guangdong. It is constructed by 19 traditional Lingnan style architectures. Apart from the exquisite carvings (wood carving, stone carving and brick carving, etc), guests can also visit the Folk Craft Museum to see the classic handcrafts from the area. Mausoleum of the Nanyue King (西汉南越王博物馆)
Discovered in 1983, Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King is housed in the 2,000 years old tomb of the Nanyue King. In the museum, you can find over 1,000 well-maintained burial artifacts (jade jewelry, gold and silver vessels, bronze and ceramic, etc). And if interested, you can rent an audio guide at the counter, which will help you to have a better understanding of the collections and the history of this museum.

Before/After the Canton Fair, you might want to do sightseeing in the nearby regions/areas. With the high-speed train, you can reach Guilin, one of the top destinations in China within 3 hours.
Train Info Usually, the train from Guangzhou to Guilin will depart from Guangzhou South Station, and arrive at Guilin Railway Station, Guilin West Station or Guilin North Station - Guilin Railway Station is the oldest station in Guilin, while both Guilin West Station and Guilin North Station are on the outskirt of Guilin (approx. 30-40 minutes ride to the downtown area).
