Situated in Hanoi Old Quarter, Ca Tru Hanoi Club is dedicated to preserve the Ca Tru – an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding acclaimed by the UNESCO in 2009. Ca Tru originates from the folk music in Northern Vietnam. A female singer, and two musical instrumentalists make up for the Ca Tru group. The female singer employs the breathing techniques and vibrato to create a beautiful sound. When singing, she always claps a wooden box or beat time with rhythm. Both of the instrumentalists create deep tones and powerful sounds through playing a three-stringed lute and drumming. Some of the Ca Tru performances include dancing shows.

Different forms of Ca Tru can achieve different social purposes, including singing for worship, singing for entertainment, singing in the palace, and singing in competition. There are 56 different musical forms or tunes in Ca Tru. Every kind of tune is called “Cach”. Folk artists use verbal and technical means of communication to let Ca Tru live for generations.

Ca Tru Hanoi Club always hold concerts on the evening of Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 20:00 to 21:00. The female singer sings the song in Vietnamese. The club also offer English interpretation for the audience throughout the show demonstrating the cultural scene in ancient Vietnam. It also introduces the history of Ca Tru and the instruments to the audience. If interested, the audience also has a chance to play the instruments.
