What is Beihai Park?
Located at the heart of Beijing, Beihai Park was the former royal garden in ancient China. It is mainly composed of Beihai Lake and Qionghua Islet. In ancient China, the emperors entertained themselves. Many old buildings in the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1912) Dynasties are spotted with the garden. The garden was opened to the public in 1925.

What to expect at Beihai ParkSeveral religious buildings are situated by the north bank of Beihai Lake, such as Chanfu Temple, Kuaixue Hall, Jingxin Zhai and Xitian Fanjing. There is also a cultural relic iron screen wall, a 16-sided polygonal tower stone pillar, 495 pieces of the real calligraphy works by the famous calligraphers in ancient China.
The Qiong Islet Scenic Area is located to the south of the Beihai Lake. It is centered around Yong'an Temple. The temple is surrounded by buildings such as corridor, the Yuexin Temple and the Yue Gu Building. The White Pagoda on the islet is the iconic building around the Beihai park. It was built in 1651. The pagoda is 35.9 meters tall. |
Tuancheng is located at the southernmost end of Beihai Park. The main building in the Tuancheng is Chengguang Hall. A 1.5-meter-high Buddha is worshiped in the hall. Kuaixuetang Calligraphy Museum has various collections of 48 steles with the calligraphy by the calligraphers from the Jin (266 - 420) and Yuan (1271 - 1368) Dynasties.
You can see the elder play with their birds in the park in the morning. From the lunar 26th of December to the lunar 7th of January, the Spring Festival Blessing Culture Festival is always held. During the period of time, visitors will have a chance to appreciate the similar ceremony for praying blessing which was done during Qianlong Period (1736 - 1795).

Best time to visit Beihai Park
If you are interested to enjoy boating on Beihai Lake, the best time to visit is in the morning. The best months to visit are from March to May and from September to October
How to get to Beihai Park
There are several buses to Beihai Park. Therefore, there are some options.
- Rent a vehicle to the park. This is the quickest and most direction option.
- Take Bus 13, 42, 90, 107, 111, 118, 609, 612, 623 and Bus 701 to the Stop of North Gate for Beihai Park (北海公园北门).
- Take Bus 5, 101, 103, 109, 124, and Bus 619 to the Stop of Beihai (北海站).
Additional Beihai Park Travel Advice
- Opening hours for Beihai Park: 06:30 - 21:00 (April 1 - October 31, it is not allowed to enter the park from 20:30); 06:30 - 20:00 (November 1 - March 31, it is not allowed to enter the park from 19:30)
- Opening hours for the gardens and the courtyards in the park: 09:00 - 18:00 (April 1 - October 31); 09:00 - 17:00 (November 1 - March 31)
- As at 8th October 2020, from April 1 to October 31, the entrance pricing to the park is 10 CNY per person (the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are charged 5 CNY per person) and the combo ticket is 20 CNY per person (the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are charged 10 CNY per person); from November 1 to March 31, the entrance pricing to the park is 5 CNY per person (the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are charged 2.5 CNY per person) and the combo ticket is 10 CNY per person (the elder above 70 years old (70 years old included) are charged 5 CNY per person). Children under 1.2m (1.2m included) are free of charge.
