Baoshan Stone Town - town on a mountain face in a valley along the Jinsha River

Baoshan Stone Town is located on a separate mushroom-shaped huge rock in a valley along the Jinsha River, 110 kilometers north of Lijiang. The town was originally built between 1277 and 1294. It is surrounded by steep cliffs. Locals built the 1.6-meters-tall stone walls around the whole town to prevent the invaders in the ancient times. Visitors and locals can only enter the town through two gates – the south gate and the north gate.

What to expect at Baoshan Stone Town
The mountain road is winding from Lijiang to Baoshan Stone Town. The old houses in the twon were completely built in stones. Before, beds, mills, chairs, benches, and cooking hearths had been made of stones. Baoshan Stone Town is home to the Naxi People for hundreds of years. It is around 200 years older than the Old Town of Lijiang. You could admire the gorgeous landscape of Jinsha River at the viewpoint on the top of the town.
As the town is on a separate rock, the means of transportation in the town is mule. The villagers keep the habit of raising pigs and chickens for hundreds of years. It is a little smelly when you walk around the town. Generally speaking, young villagers have gone to the city for making a living. When you explore the town, most of the locals you see will be the elders and children. Some elder villagers couldn’t speak Mandarin but they are kind-hearted. If you smile to them, they will smile back. On fine days, the elder always enjoy sunbathing and chatting in front of the south gate or the north gate. It requires good body conditions to walk uphill on the stone steps in the town.
Near Baoshan Stone Town are rice terraces. In spring, the terraces are decorated with rape flowers. In autumn, they are filled with golden rice. In the rainy season from May to October, water in Jinsha River is muddy, which is not ideal for photographing. While if you are planning to stay overnight at the town on fine days, you will be amazed at the starry sky in the evening. Between March and April, you will take great pictures there as well. The accommodations in the town are not as good as those in Lijiang.
Best time to visit Baoshan Stone Town
If you are interested to explore the local simple life, the best time to visit is in the morning.
The best months to visit are from March to November. If you are planning to visit Baoshan Stone Town for photography purposes, the best months to visit are from March to April.
How to get to Baoshan Stone Town
There is no direct bus from Lijiang to Baoshan Stone Town. The only option is to rent a vehicle.

- Opening hours: 24 hours.
- As at 19th October 2020, the entrance pricing to the town is free of charge.
- If you want to visit the old house with stone beds, stone mills, stone chairs, stone benches, and stone cooking hearths, the entrance pricing to the house is 20 – 30 CNY per person.
- As it always takes around 3 – 4 hours drive from Lijiang to Baoshan Stone Town, it is recommended that you stay overnight in the town that you could have enough time to enjoy the stunning starry sky in the evening and explore local simple life.
- As the mountain road to the town is winding, those who have car sickness are suggested to take some anti-motion sickness drug.
- As there are lots of stone steps in the town, it is suggested that those whose body conditions are not good for hiking should not explore the town for safety.
- As the road across the town is not easy to walk, it is not suggested that you explore the town in the evening.
- Please wear the sunscreen cream and sunglasses.
